What OMNACORTIL is used for?

It is used to,

  • treat various illnesses such as allergic reactions (e.g: asthma, eczema) and inflammatory conditions (e.g: arthritis, ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, inflammation of the heart)
  • treat kidney problems
  • treat problems with your blood including haemolytic anaemia (a disorder which breaks down red blood cells) and leukaemia
  • prevent rejection following an organ transplant

Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:

  • are allergic to Prednisolone or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have an infection that affects your whole body (systemic infection), such as measles, chickenpox or shingles
  • are suffering from a herpes infection of the eye
  • have severe depression or manic-depression, psychoses (bipolar disorder)
  • have epilepsy (fits)
  • have diabetes or high blood pressure
  • have kidney, liver or heart problems
  • have brittle or weak bones called osteoporosis
  • are receiving treatment for a condition called myasthenia gravis (a rare muscular disorder)
  • have ever had blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or thromboembolism)
  • have glaucoma
  • have stomach ulcer
  • have ever had a bad reaction such as muscle weakness to any steroid
  • have or ever had ‘tuberculosis’ (TB)
  • are receiving any vaccines
  • have scleroderma
  • have blurred vision
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • Your doctor will decide the most appropriate dose to treat your child


Tell your doctor if you are taking:

  • ritonavir, cobicistat medicines to treat HIV 
  • rifampicin and rifabutin (antibiotics used to treat tuberculosis)
  • carbamazepine, phenytoin, primidone and phenobarbitone (for epilepsy)
  • ephedrine (a nasal decongestant)
  • aminoglutethimide (anti-cancer treatment)
  • mifepristone (used for termination of pregnancy)
  • erythromycin (an antibiotic, used to treat infections)
  • ketoconazole, amphotericin (used to treat fungal infections)
  • ciclosporin (used to prevent rejection after transplants)
  • oestrogen hormones including the contraceptive pill
  • medicines for diabetics (such as insulin)
  • medicines used to treat high blood pressure (e.g. hydralazine)
  • diuretics also known as water tablets (e.g. bendrofluazide)
  • somatotropin (a growth hormone)
  • anticoagulant medicines which thin the blood (e.g. warfarin and coumarin)
  • aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. ibuprofen)
  • methotrexate (anti-cancer treatment)
  • acetazolamide (used for glaucoma and epilepsy)
  • carbenoxolone (used in the treatment of stomach ulcers)
  • medicines used to treat asthma (e.g. theophylline, bambuterol, fenoterol, formoterol, salbutamol and terbutaline)
  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
  • Take this medicine by mouth only
  • It is important to shake the bottle for at least 10 seconds before use
  • Swallow the undiluted solution
  • Do not mix the solution with any other liquid

If you take more OMNACORTIL

  • If you take more OMNACORTIL, talk to your doctor immediately

If you forget to take OMNACORTIL

  • If you have forgotten to take OMNACORTIL take them as soon as possible on the same day. Do not take a double dose

If you stop taking OMNACORTIL

  • If you stop taking the OMNACORTIL suddenly you may develop high temperature, muscle and joint pain, runny nose, weight loss, itchy skin, red, sore and sticky eyes (conjunctivitis), headache, being sick, blurred vision, low blood pressure 
Very Rare

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • severe allergic reaction includes red and lumpy skin rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of face, mouth, lips or eyelids, unexplained high temperature (fever) and feeling faint, swelling affects your throat and makes breathing and swallowing difficult
  • feeling depressed, suicidal thoughts
  • feeling high (mania)
  • feeling anxious, having problems sleeping, difficulty in thinking or being confused and losing your memory, feeling, seeing or hearing things that do not exist
  • having strange and frightening thoughts, changing how you act or have feelings of being alone




Additional Information


  • Keep this medicine out of reach of children
  • Store in a refrigerator (2-8°C). Once opened, your medicine can be stored at a temperature below (15-25°C)
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date
