NIZONIDE DT 200MG contains Nitazoxanide which belongs to a group of medicines called antiprotozoal agents. It is used to treat diarrhoea caused by Giardia lamblia or Cryptosporidium parvum. Diarrhoea is passing loose or watery bowel movements more frequently and occurs when the lining of the intestine is unable to absorb fluid, or it actively secretes fluid.
Nitazoxanide inhibits the growth of sporozoites and oocysts of Cryptosporidium and trophozoites of Giardia and interferes with pyruvate ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) which is essential to anaerobic energy metabolism. PFOR enzyme from G. lamblia reduces nitazoxanide by transfer of electrons in the absence of ferredoxin. Thus, the DNA-derived PFOR protein sequence of C. parvum develops to be similar to that of G. lamblia.
