INTRODUCTION

NIZONIDE 500MG contains Nitazoxanide which belongs to a group of medicines called antiprotozoal agents. It is used to treat diarrhoea caused by Giardia lamblia or Cryptosporidium parvum. Diarrhoea is passing loose or watery bowel movements more frequently and occurs when the lining of the intestine is unable to absorb fluid, or it actively secretes fluid.

Nitazoxanide inhibits the growth of sporozoites and oocysts of Cryptosporidium and trophozoites of Giardia and interferes with pyruvate ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) which is essential to anaerobic energy metabolism. PFOR enzyme from G. lamblia reduces nitazoxanide by transfer of electrons in the absence of ferredoxin. Thus, the DNA-derived PFOR protein sequence of C. parvum develops to be similar to that of G. lamblia.

Before taking this NIZONIDE 500MG, tell your physician if you have liver, kidney or heart problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding. This medicine is not suitable for use in children and adolescents below 12 years of age. The common side effects are headache, vomiting and stomach upset or pain.
