Camphor works by activating certain heat-sensitive receptors, thereby exciting and desensitizing sensory nerves, providing pain relief, whereas capsaicin works by reducing the secretion of substances that cause inflammation. It also causes defunctionalisation of nerve fibers that carry pain stimuli to the brain.
Eucalyptus oil works by minimizing the inflammation-causing agents, thereby relieving the associated pain. Menthol works by blocking certain opioid receptors that are responsible for causing pain. Methylsalicylate sodium alters the pain transmission in the sensory nerves by causing counter-irritation at the nerve endings at the site of application.
