INTRODUCTION

MINIRIN MELT 120MCG contains desmopressin which belongs to the group of medicines called synthetic antidiuretic peptide. It is used to treat diabetes insipidus (a condition with extreme thirst and continuous production of large volumes of dilute urine). It can also be used to treat primary nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting from the age of 5) and nocturia in adults up to 65 years (night-time urine production exceeding bladder capacity).

Desmopressin works by reducing the amount of water that is eliminated in the urine. It enhances the reabsorption of water in the kidneys. Avoid drinking large amounts of water or fluid during this medication that leads to a build-up of water resulting in dilution of the salt in the body and may cause a serious problems or convulsions.

The most common side effect of taking this medicine are headache, stomach pain swelling of ankles. Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you are dehydrated due to vomiting, diarrhea or systemic infections. There is an increased risk of pre-eclampsia during this medication, so inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. MINIRIN MELT 120MCG should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor for advice.

USES OF MINIRIN MELT 120MCG

  • Diabetes insipidus (a condition with extreme thirst and continuous production of large volumes of dilute urine)

HOW MINIRIN MELT 120MCG WORKS

Desmopressin mimics the action of endogenous anti-diuretic hormone. After administration, desmopressin works by reducing the amount of water that is eliminated in the urine. It enhances the reabsorption of water in the kidneys.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Always take this medicine as directed by your doctor. Swallow the medicine as whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose for you depending upon your condition. Continue to take this medicine, as long as your doctor tells you to do so, to obtain better results. Avoid drinking large amounts of water while taking MINIRIN MELT 120MCG since it could lead to a build-up of water leading to serious problems or convulsions.

SIDE EFFECTS OF MINIRIN MELT 120MCG

SERIOUS

  • confusion
  • unexplained weight gain
  • ankle swelling
  • nausea or vomiting
  • signs of allergic reaction (such as itching, skin rashes, swelling of face, lips or throat, difficulty in breathing, chest tightness or coughing)

COMMON

  • headache
  • stomach pain
  • diarrhea, constipation
  • increased blood pressure

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Stomach pain:

Try to rest and relax. You can eat and drink slowly or have smaller and frequent meals. Keeping a heat pad on your stomach may also help. If still pain persists, speak to your doctor.

Weight gain:

Exercise more regularly. e.g. walking or running. 

Headache:  

Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Do not drink too much alcohol.

Constipation: 

Eat fibre rich foods like fresh fruit, vegetables and cereals. Drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly.

Diarrhea:

Drink lots of fluids, such as water or juice, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any medicines without speaking to a doctor.

PREGNANCY

MINIRIN MELT 120MCG should be used with caution in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before taking, because blood pressure monitoring is recommended due to the increased risk of pre-eclampsia.

BREASTFEEDING

MINIRIN MELT 120MCG should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate any machines if your ability is affected by this medicine.

ALCOHOL

Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking this medicine.

KIDNEY

MINIRIN MELT 120MCG should be taken with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER

MINIRIN MELT 120MCG should be taken with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Desmopressin.

OTHERS

Before taking this medicine, consult your doctor if you have an illness causing fluid and/or salt imbalance e.g. vomiting, diarrhea, systemic infections, fever or gastroenteritis.

INTERACTIONS

Talk to your doctor, if you are taking,

  • medicine used to treat depression or epilepsy (fluoxetine, phenytoin)
  • medicine used for pain and/or inflammation e.g. indomethacin, aspirin
  • other diuretic medicine (e.g. furosemide)
  • loperamide (used to treat diarrhea)
