INTRODUCTION

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION contains Meropenem which belongs to the group of medicines known as Antibiotics. It is used to treat various bacterial infections such as pneumonia (including community acquired pneumonia and nosocomial pneumonia), urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, gynaecological infections such as endometritis and pelvic inflammatory disease, skin and skin structure infections, meningitis and septicaemia.

It is also indicated for empiric treatment, for presumed infections in adult patients with febrile neutropenia, used as monotherapy or in combination with anti-viral or anti-fungal agents. MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION is also used in the management of neutropenic patients with fever that is suspected to be due to a bacterial infection and bacterial infection of the blood.

During the treatment, your doctor may do blood tests from time to time. MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver problems, kidney problems, and diarrhea.

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION is generally not recommended in patients with gastrointestinal problems and hypersensitivity reactions. Consult your doctor before receiving if you are pregnant or breastfeeding women.

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION should be used with caution in children over 3 months old and in geriatric patients.

The common side effects of MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION are abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, skin rash, itchy skin, pain, and inflammation. Consult your doctor if the above symptom does not improve.

USES OF MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION

Used to treat bacterial infections such as:

  • pneumonia (including community acquired pneumonia and nosocomial pneumonia)
  • urinary tract infections
  • intra-abdominal infections
  • gynaecological infections such as endometritis and pelvic inflammatory disease
  • skin and skin structure infections
  • meningitis
  • septicaemia

HOW MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION WORKS

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic which is active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It exerts its action by penetrating bacterial cells readily and interfering with the synthesis of vital cell wall components, which leads to cell death.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION will be administered intravenously only by a doctor or a nurse. Your doctor will administer the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight, and severity of the infection. 

SIDE EFFECTS OF MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION

COMMON

  • abdominal pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • skin rash, itchy skin
  • pain and inflammation
  • increased platelets in the blood
  • change in blood tests

UNCOMMON

  • tingling feeling (pins and needles)
  • infections of the mouth or the vagina are caused by a fungus (thrush)
  • diarrhea with bowel inflammation
  • sore veins
  • frequent infections, high temperature, and sore throat
  • sudden beginning of a severe rash or blistering or peeling skin (may be associated with a high fever and joint pains)

RARE

  • fits (seizures)
  • acute disorientation and confusion

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects after receiving MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION:

  • severe allergic reaction (severe rash, itching, or hives on the skin, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other parts of the body, shortness of breath, wheezing, or trouble breathing)
  • serious skin reactions (serious hypersensitivity reactions involving fever, skin rash, changes in the blood tests, severe red scaly rash, skin bumps that contain pus, blisters or peeling of the skin, severe skin rashes appearing as reddish circular patches often with central blisters on the trunk, skin peeling, ulcers of mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes)
  • being breathlessness when you do not expect it and red or brown urine (may be a sign of damage to red blood cells)

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea or Vomiting:

Take this medicine with, or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil-rich or spicy foods.

Diarrhoea:

Drink more fluids like water or fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated. Do not consume any medicine on your own for diarrhea without consulting your doctor.

Stomach pain:

Try to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly or try to have lesser and more frequent meals. Keep a heating pad on your stomach. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor.

Headache:

Rest and relax. Drink more fluids like water and apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if needed. Do not consume alcohol. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor.

PREGNANCY

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION should not be used in pregnancy unless the benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus. Consult your doctor before receiving.

BREASTFEEDING

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION should not be used in breast-feeding women unless the benefit justifies the potential risk to the baby. Consult your doctor before receiving.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

There is no data available, but it is anticipated that MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION will not affect the ability to drive and use machines.

KIDNEY

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION should be taken with caution in patients with kidney problems. If needed dose will be adjusted accordingly. Consult your doctor before receiving.

LIVER

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before receiving.

ALLERGY

Do not use MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION if you are allergic to Meropenem, antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins, or carbapenems or to any ingredients of this medicine.

OTHERS

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION is not recommended if you have or had:

  • a history of gastro-intestinal problems like colitis
  • hypersensitivity reactions

Before receiving MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION, inform your doctor if you have or had:

  • severe diarrhoea

Use in pediatrics:

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION is not recommended to use in children below 3 months. Your doctor will administer the right dose depends on your child’s age, body weight and severity of the infection for children above 3 months. Consult your doctor for advice before receiving MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION.

Use in geriatrics:

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your physician for advice before receiving MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before receiving MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • medicine used for the treatment of gout (Ex. probenecid)
  • medicines used to treat epilepsy (Ex. valproic acid, sodium valproate, valpromide)
  • medicines used to prevent or treat blood clots (Ex. warfarin)

Overdosage:

MINIPENEM 125MG INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your physician or nurse if you experience any unusual symptoms.
