What MERIGENTA 80MG is used for?

  • It is used to treat a wide variety of infections such as chest, wound and blood infections

Talk to your Doctor, if you:

  • are allergic or hypersensitive to Gentamicin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine   
  • have suffer from a disorder called myasthenia gravis (severe weakness of selected muscles of the body)
  • have diabetes
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • Your doctor will give you the right dose depends on your child’s age, body weight and disease
  • Do not drive if you experience any effect which may impair your ability to drive or use machines

Tell your doctor if you are taking,

  • other aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, methicillin (used to treat bacterial infection)
  • warfarin and phenindione (used to thin the blood)
  • amphotericin B (used to treat fungal infection)
  • neostigmine and pyridostigmine (used to treat muscle weakness)
  • cyclosporin (used to prevent organ rejection)
  • cisplatin (used to treat cancer)
  • some diuretics such as ethacrynic acid and furosemide
  • tubocurarine and succinylcholine (used as muscle relaxant)
  • indomethacin (used to treat pain and inflammations)
  • bisphosphonates (used to treat osteoporosis)
  • botulinum toxin (used for the treatment of muscle spasticity, an involuntary flexing of the muscles)
  • MERIGENTA 80MG will be given by a doctor or nurse
  • It will be usually injected into a muscle but may also be injected into a vein

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • severe allergic reaction: a sudden itchy rash (hives), swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth or throat (which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing), and you may feel you are going to faint
  • nausea or vomiting
  • skin rash or development of raised coloured blotches which may be itchy
  • purple discolouration under the skin
  • fever, sore throat and mouth
  • muscle weakness
  • kidney disease with symptoms such as reduced urine output
  • low blood cell counts (red and white blood cells) and further blood abnormalities or disorders (known as blood dyscrasia)
  • damage to the brain with signs such as seizures, confusion, tiredness, depression and hallucinations
  • liver problems
  • low potassium or calcium or magnesium levels in the blood
  • high urine levels of phosphate and amino acids (so called Fanconi-like syndrome, associated with high doses given over a long time)
