  • It is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Talk to your doctor before taking MELMET SR If you,

  • are allergic to metformin hydrochloride
  • have type 1 diabetes
  • have severely reduced kidney function/liver problems/heart problems/breathing problems
  • have uncontrolled diabetes, with, for example, severe hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose), nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis
  • have ketoacidosis (a condition in which substances called 'ketone bodies' accumulate in the blood and which can lead to diabetic pre-coma)
  • have dehydration as it may lead to kidney problems, which can put you at risk for lactic acidosis
  • have a severe infection, such as an infection affecting your lung or bronchial system or your kidney
  • drink a lot of alcohol

  • ranolazine, vandetanib, dolutegravir, and cimetidine
  • other medicines used to treat diabetes such as insulin

  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
  • Swallow MELMET SR whole and never crush, cut or chew
  • The recommended starting dose of MELMET SR is 500 mg orally once daily with the evening meal
  • Increase the dose in increments of 500 mg weekly on the basis of glycemic control and tolerability, up to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily with the evening meal

If you take more MELMET SR

  • If you have taken more MELMET SR than you should have, you may experience lactic acidosis. Talk to your doctor straight away

If you forget to take MELMET SR

  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Take the next dose at the usual time
