What LIRIN 500MG is used for?

It is used to treat bacterial infections of the following:

  • respiratory tract
  • infections of the ear
  • urinary tract
  • gastro-intestine
  • enteric/typhoid fever
  • gynecological infections and gonorrhea
  • septicemia (infections of the blood)
  • skin and soft tissue
  • endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart and its valves)
  • peritonitis (an inflammation of the peritoneum, the thin tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen)
  • meningitis (inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord)

Talk to your Doctor, if you:

  • are allergic to ampicillin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • suffer from kidney problems as you may require a lower dose than normal
  • are suffering from glandular fever or cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection
  • are suffering from leukemia, HIV or syphilis
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • Consult your doctor for advice before giving this medicine to your child

Tell your doctor if you are taking,

  • allopurinol, sulfinpyrazone or probenecid (used to treat gout)
  • oral contraceptives
  • tetracycline, erythromycin and chloramphenicol (used to treat infections)
  • warfarin or phenindione (used to treat blood clots)
  • methotrexate (used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis or malignant diseases such as lymphatic leukemia)
  • chloroquine (used for prevention and treatment of malaria)
  • oral typhoid vaccine (used to prevent typhoid)
  • other drugs which prevent the growth of bacteria such as erythromycin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline
  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
  • It should be taken orally on an empty stomach, at least thirty minutes to one hour before food

If you take more LIRIN 500MG

  • If you accidentally take too much of medicine, talk your doctor immediately

If you forget to take LIRIN 500MG

  • If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, then carry on as before. Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose you have missed

If you stop taking LIRIN 500MG

  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do 

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Very Rare
  • swelling of the face, mouth or throat
  • red skin rash, itching or raised itchy red lumps (hives)
  • difficulty breathing, wheezing or shortness of breath, dizziness, peeling, swelling or blistering of the skin
  • severe bloody diarrhoea with fever and abdominal pain
  • rash along with joint pain, fever or swollen lymph nodes especially under the arms
  • swollen liver and jaundice
  • unexplained bleeding, bruising, pale skin, weakness, tiredness
  • infections more likely such as sore throat or mouth ulcers
  • problems with blood clotting
