LINANEXT 5 contains Linagliptin which is an oral anti-diabetic agent. It is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when treatment with first line oral anti-diabetic medicine (such as metformin) or diet and exercise does not give adequate response. It is generally used in combination with other anti-diabetic medicines (such as metformin, glimepiride, glipizide, empagliflozin, or insulin) for better results. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic medical condition in which the body does not make enough insulin, or the produced insulin does not work well. Symptoms includes excessive urination, excessive thirst, hunger, fatigue, and blurred vision.
Linagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor. It helps pancreas to secrete more insulin (a hormone that digests glucose/sugar) by inhibiting an enzyme called Dipeptidyl peptidase 4, which ultimately leads to decrease in blood glucose level. Along with the treatment, follow regular exercise and diet plan as advised by your doctor to achieve better results.
LINANEXT 5 is strictly not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Your doctor will monitor your blood sugar levels through periodic blood/urine tests. Before taking LINANEXT 5 inform your doctor if you have or ever had kidney disease, heart disease, or pancreas problems. LINANEXT 5 should be used with caution in pregnant and breast-feeding women. The most common side effects of LINANEXT 5 are fast heartbeat, anxiety, increased sweating, and tiredness.
LINANEXT 5 effectively reduces blood glucose levels, where linagliptin acts by increasing the release of insulin (a hormone secreted by pancreas that helps in digestion) by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called Dipeptidyl peptidase 4. As a result, the sugars present in the blood are digested by insulin, leading to a marked decrease in blood glucose level.
Take LINANEXT 5 with or without food. Swallow LINANEXT 5 as whole and do not crush or chew it. Your doctor will decide the dose and duration of the therapy depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
Stop taking LINANEXT 5 and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
Low blood sugar:
Try to take sugary snack or drink (in small glass) like fruit juices or sugar candy and test your sugar level after 10 minutes, if there is no change in blood sugar to the required level again try taking juices or snack. Consult your doctor if your symptoms do not improve.
It is unknown whether LINANEXT 5 is harmful to the unborn child and so it should be used with caution in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before taking.
It is not known whether LINANEXT 5 passes into human breast milk and so it should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before taking.
Do not drive or operate machinery while taking LINANEXT 5, since it may cause too low blood sugar levels.
Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with LINANEXT 5.
LINANEXT 5 should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
LINANEXT 5 should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver function impairment or active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
Do not take LINANEXT 5 if you are allergic to Linagliptin.
Before taking LINANEXT 5, inform your doctor if you:
Use in pediatrics:
LINANEXT 5 is not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age. Consult your doctor for advice.
Use in geriatrics:
LINANEXT 5 can be used in elderly patients above 65 years of age with no dose adjustment needed. Consult your doctor before taking.
Before taking LINANEXT 5, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of LINANEXT 5, consult your doctor immediately. Overdosage can increase the risk of side effects.

Does LINANEXT 5 cause hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)?
When LINANEXT 5 taken in combination with medicines called sulphonylureas and/or insulin, it can cause decrease in your blood sugar levels which may affect your consciousness. Your doctor may recommend frequent blood test to monitor your glucose level to minimise the risk of hypoglycaemia, especially combined with sulphonylurea and/or insulin.
How does LINANEXT 5 works?
LINANEXT 5 increases the release of insulin from the pancreas and thus decreases the hormones that raise blood sugar levels. This reduces the fasting and post meal sugar level.
Is LINANEXT 5 safe to use in kidney disease patients?
Yes, LINANEXT 5 is safe to use in patients with kidney disease and no dose adjustment is recommended for these patients.
