INTRODUCTION

LAMOTEM 50MG contains Lamotrigine which belongs to a group of medicines called anti-epileptics. This medicine can be used alone or in combination with other anti-epileptic medicines. It is used to treat seizures that occur with a condition called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome for adults and children aged above 13 years of age. In children aged 2 to 12 years it is used to treat a type of epilepsy called typical absence seizures.

It is used to treat bipolar disorder in adults above 18 years, alone or in combination with other medicines. People with bipolar disorder have extreme mood swings, with periods of excitement alternating with periods of deep sadness or despair. It prevent the depression that occur in bipolar disorder. Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, depression, or suicidal thoughts.

Take this medicine exactly as instructed by your doctor. The dose you take will depend on your age, other medications you are taking and whether you have any kidney or liver problems. Your doctor will prescribe you a low dose at the start, and gradually increase the dose over a few weeks until you reach a dose that is effective for your condition. Never take more tablets than prescribed by your doctor. LAMOTEM 50MG is not recommended for children under 2 years of age.

  • Treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder

HOW LAMOTEM 50MG WORKS

LAMOTEM 50MG works by blocking the signals in the brain that trigger epileptic seizures (fits).

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take this medicine according to the dose and frequency as advised by your doctor. It may be taken with or without food.

SIDE EFFECTS OF LAMOTEM 50MG

SERIOUS

  • skin rashes or redness
  • ulcers  
  • high temperature (fever)
  • welling around your face, or swollen glands
  • unexpected bleeding or bruising
  • sore throat
  • increased levels of liver enzymes

COMMON

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • sleepiness or drowsiness
  • nausea, vomiting
  • agitation, aggression or irritability
  • shaking or tremors
  • difficulty in sleeping
  • diarrhoea
  • dry mouth
  • tiredness
  • back and joint pain

RARE

  • conjunctivitis
  • meningitis
  • rapid, uncontrollable eye movements
  • stevens-Johnson syndrome

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Headache:

Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Take rest in a quiet and dark room. Drink tea or coffee.

Dizziness or drowsiness:

Get up and move around to feel awake, take small naps to edge off the sleepiness. Give your eyes a break to avoid fatigue and eat a healthy food to boost energy.

Feeling sick (nausea) or indigestion:

Stick to simple normal meals and do not eat rich or spicy foods.

Vomiting:

Drink clear or ice-cold drinks. Eat light, bland foods and avoid fried, greasy, or sweet foods.

Diarrhoea:

Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. ORS should be used to prevent dehydration.  

Sleeping problems:

Stick to a sleep schedule. Avoid heavy meals before bed.

PREGNANCY

LAMOTEM 50MG should be used with caution in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

BREASTFEEDING

LAMOTEM 50MG should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this medicine, since it may cause dizziness and double vision.

KIDNEY

LAMOTEM 50MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

LIVER

LAMOTEM 50MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver function impairment or active liver diseases. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

ALLERGY

Do not take if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Lamotrigine or any ingredients of this medicine.

OTHERS

Tell your doctor if you had or have a condition such as:

  • Brugada syndrome (a condition that causes an irregular heartbeat)

INTERACTIONS

Tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription or the following:

  • other anti-epileptic medicines
  • anti-psychotic medicines
  • rifampicin (antibiotic)
  • medicines used to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
  • hormonal contraceptives
