What LAMICTAL XR is used for?

It is used,

  • together with other medicines to treat primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures and partial onset seizures in people 13 years of age and older
  • alone to treat partial seizures when changing from certain other medicines used in people 13 years and older

Tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines including herbal medicines or other medicines bought without a prescription such as:

  • oxcarbazepine, felbamate, gabapentin, levetiracetam, pregabalin, topiramate, valproate, phenytoin, primidone or phenobarbitone zonisamide used to treat epilepsy
  • lithium, risperidone, olanzapine or aripiprazole used to treat mental health problems
  • bupropion, used to treat mental health problems or to stop smoking
  • rifampicin, which is an antibiotic
  • hormonal contraceptives, such as the Pill

  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
  • It can be taken with or without food, depending on what condition you’re being treated for and the way you respond to treatment
  • Your healthcare provider may change your dose. Do not change your dose without talking to your healthcare provider
  • Swallow your tablets whole
  • Do not chew, crush, or divide LAMICTAL XR
  • If you have trouble swallowing LAMICTAL XR, tell your healthcare provider because there may be another form of lamotrigine you can take

If you take more LAMICTAL XR

  • If you take more LAMICTAL XR than you should contact a doctor or nearest hospital emergency department immediately

If you forget to take LAMICTAL XR

  • Don’t take extra tablets to make up for a missed dose. Just take your next dose at the usual time. In case you forget to take multiple doses of LAMICTAL XR, ask your doctor for advice on how to start taking it again

If you stop taking LAMICTAL XR

  • Don’t stop taking LAMICTAL XR without advice. It must be taken for as long as your doctor recommends. Don’t stop unless your doctor advises you to. If you stop taking LAMICTAL XR, your dose will not need to be reduced gradually

  • a skin rash
  • hives
  • fever
  • swollen lymph glands
  • painful sores in the mouth or around your eyes
  • swelling of your lips or tongue
  • yellowing of your skin or eyes
  • unusual bruising or bleeding
  • severe fatigue or weakness
  • severe muscle pain
  • frequent infections
  • thoughts about suicide or dying
  • attempt to commit suicide
  • new or worse depression
  • new or worse anxiety
  • feeling agitated or restless
  • panic attacks
  • trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • new or worse irritability
  • acting aggressive, being angry, or violent
  • acting on dangerous impulses
  • an extreme increase in activity and talking (mania)
  • other unusual changes in behavior or mood
  • aseptic meningitis marked by fever, headache, stiff neck, unusual sensitivity to light
