INTRODUCTION

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION is a combination of Cefoperazone and Sulbactam which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to treat various bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections (upper and lower), intra-abdominal infections, septicemia (serious bloodstream infection), meningitis (inflammation of brain and spinal cord membranes, typically caused by an infection), skin and soft tissue infections.

It is also used to treat bone and joint infections, gonorrhea (sexually transmitted bacterial infection), endometritis (inflammation of the uterine lining due to infection), pelvic inflammatory disease (infection of the female reproductive organs) and other infections of the genital tract.

Bacterial infections are caused by multiplication of specific harmful strain of bacteria anywhere in the body. It is characterized by symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, headache tiredness and swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, groin or elsewhere.

Before receiving LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION, inform your doctor if you have impaired kidney function, severe biliary obstruction (blockage of the bile ducts), severe liver disease, malabsorption conditions and have schedule for laboratory tests (such as measuring glucose in the urine).

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if advised by the doctor. Also, it should be used with caution in children and elderly patients.

The most common side effects of receiving LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION are diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Inform your doctor if any of these side effects bothers you.

USES OF LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION

Treats bacterial infections such as:

HOW LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION WORKS

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION contains cefoperazone and sulbactam. Cefoperazone works by stopping the formation of bacterial cell coverings, which makes the bacteria susceptible for killing. Sulbactam works by reducing bacterial resistance and enhancing the activity of cefoperazone against the bacteria. Together, they helps to treat various bacterial infections.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse, either into the vein (intravenously) or muscle (intramuscularly). Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and severity of the infection.

SIDE EFFECTS OF LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION

COMMON

  • diarrhea
  • nausea, vomiting
  • coagulopathy (impairment in the blood's ability to clot)

UNCOMMON

  • headache
  • itching
  • raised red rashes (urticaria)
  • pain or inflammation of a vein at the site of injection
  • fever, chills

RARE

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects after receiving LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION:

  • allergic reactions
  • skin reactions such as toxic epidermal necrolysis, stevens-johnson syndrome, dermatitis exfoliative (signs include blistering and peeling of the skin)
  • persistent bleeding

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea:

Take regular sips of cold drink. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. If nausea does not improve, inform your doctor.

Headache:

Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Drink plenty of fluids. Try taking rest in a quiet and dark room. Apply pain relieving balm on your forehead if necessary. Inform your doctor if the headache does not reduce.

Diarrhea:

Keep yourself hydrated by drinking lot of fluids such as water or fruit juices. If the symptom does not improve, inform your doctor.

PREGNANCY

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION should be used during pregnancy only if considered clearly necessary Consult your doctor before receiving LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION.

BREASTFEEDING

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION should be used with caution in breast-feeding women as small amount of this medicine is excreted in the breast milk. Consult your doctor before receiving LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION does not affect your ability to drive or use machinery.

ALCOHOL

Avoid consuming alcohol while receiving LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION because it may cause flushing, sweating, headache and increase in the heartbeat.

KIDNEY

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with impaired kidney function. Consult your doctor before receiving LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION.

LIVER

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with severe biliary obstruction (blockage of the bile ducts) and severe liver disease. Consult your doctor before receiving LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION.

ALLERGY

Do not receive LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION if you are allergic to cefoperazone, sulbactam, beta-lactam antibiotics (such as penicillins and cephalosporins (Ex. cefuroxime)) or any other ingredients of this medicine.

OTHERS

Before receiving LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION, inform your doctor if you:

  • have poor diet and malabsorption conditions
  • have any scheduled laboratory tests (such as measuring glucose in the urine)

Use in pediatrics:

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION should be used with caution in children. Your child’s doctor may adjust the dose depending upon child’s body weight. Consult your child’s doctor for advice.

Use in geriatrics:

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before receiving LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • medicines used to treat bacterial infections such as aminoglycosides (Ex. gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin and streptomycin)
  • oral anti-coagulants (Ex. warfarin) (used to prevent or treat blood clots)

Overdosage:

LACTAZON S 1.5GM INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms such as neurologic effects (such as fits).
