What KLACID 500MG is used for?

It is used to treat:

  • flare-up of chronic bronchitis and infection of the lungs (pneumonia)
  • severe infection of the sinuses (sinusitis), throat (pharyngitis) and tonsils (tonsillitis)
  • skin and tissue infections

Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:

  • are allergic to Clarithromycin or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have severe liver or kidney disease
  • have heart problems (e.g. heart disease, heart failure, an unusually slow heart rate, or abnormally low levels of magnesium in your blood (hypomagnesaemia))
  • have hypokalaemia (low levels of potassium in blood)
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before receiving this medicine
  • KLACID 500MG is not recommended in children under 12 years of age

  • KLACID 500MG may make you feel dizzy or drowsy. If it affects you in this way, do not drive or operate machinery

Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines such as:

  • cisapride (to treat stomach disorders)
  • terfenadine or astemizole (to treat hay fever or allergy)
  • lovastatin, simvastatin, rosuvastatin, atorvastatin (used to lower levels of cholesterol)
  • ergotamine or dihydroergotamine (to treat migraines)
  • colchicine (usually taken for gout)
  • digoxin (to treat heart failure)
  • quinidine or disopyramide (to treat abnormal heart rhythm)
  • warfarin or acenocoumarol (to thin the blood)
  • triazolam, alprazolam or midazolam (sedatives)
  • rifabutin, rifampicin, rifapentin (to treat some infections)
  • carbamazepine, valproate, phenobarbital or phenytoin (to treat epilepsy)
  • methylprednisolone (to treat inflammation)
  • sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil (to treat erection problems)
  • tolterodine (to treat urinary frequency)
  • omeprazole (to treat indigestion)
  • cyclosporin, tacrolimus, sirolimus (to help prevent rejection after a transplant)
  • theophylline (to treat asthma)
  • itraconazole or fluconazole (to treat fungal infections)
  • nateglinide, pioglitazone, repaglinide, rosiglitazone or insulin (to treat diabetes)
  • verapramil (to treat high blood pressure)
  • lincosamides a type of antibiotic
  • ticagrelor or ranolazine (for heart attack, chest pain or angina)
  • KLACID 500MG should be administered under the responsibility of a healthcare professional
Very Rare

Like all medicines, KLACID 500MG can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • severe or prolonged diarrhea
  • rash, difficulty breathing, fainting or swelling of the face, tongue, lips, eyes and throat
  • yellowing of the skin (jaundice), skin irritation, pale stools, dark urine, tender abdomen or loss of appetite
  • severe skin reactions such as blistering of the skin, mouth, lips, eyes and genitals
  • inflammation, tenderness or pain at the site of the injection
  • difficulty in sleeping
  • changes in sense of taste
  • headache
  • widening of blood vessels
  • stomach problems such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea
  • increased sweating
  • high temperature
  • swelling, redness or itchiness of the skin
  • oral or vaginal ‘thrush’ (a fungal infection)
  • inflammation of the stomach and intestines
  • increase of eosinophils (white blood cells involved in immunity)
  • exaggerated immune response to a foreign agent
  • lack or loss of appetite, anxiety, nervousness
  • drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness or shaking
  • involuntary muscle movements
  • vertigo, ringing in the ears or hearing loss
  • changes in heart rhythm such as palpitations or an irregular heartbeat
  • nose bleed
  • asthma, lung disease, tightening of air passages, making breathing difficult
  • inflammation of the lining of the gullet (oesophagus) anal pain, bloating, constipation, burping, dry mouth
  • decrease of the levels of blood platelets (blood platelets help stop bleeding)
  • feeling weak, tired and having no energy
  • allergic skin reactions which cause severe illness with ulceration of the mouth, lips and skin which causes severe illness with rash, fever and inflammation of internal organs
