What K MET is used for?

  • It is used together with diet and exercise to lower the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in overweight adults, when diet and exercise alone for 3 to 6 months have not been enough to control blood glucose (sugar)

Talk to your doctor before taking K MET if you,

  • are allergic to metformin hydrochloride or to any of the other ingredients of K MET
  • have type 1 diabetes
  • have severely reduced kidney function/liver problems/heart problems/breathing problems
  • have uncontrolled diabetes, with, for example, severe hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose), nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis
  • have ketoacidosis (a condition in which substances called 'ketone bodies' accumulate in the blood and which can lead to diabetic pre-coma)
  • have dehydration as it may lead to kidney problems, which can put you at risk for lactic acidosis
  • have a severe infection, such as an infection affecting your lung or bronchial system or your kidney
  • drink a lot of alcohol
  • Do not take K MET, if you are pregnant or breast feeding
  • Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine


  • K MET taken on its own does not cause hypoglycaemia (symptoms of low blood sugar or hypoglycaemia, such as faintness, confusion and increased sweating) and therefore should not affect your ability to drive or use machinery

Tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. It is especially important to mention the following:

  • medicines which increase urine production (diuretics such as furosemide)
  • medicines used to treat pain and inflammation (NSAID and COX-2 inhibitors, such as ibuprofen and celecoxib)
  • certain medicines for the treatment of high blood pressure (ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor antagonists)
  • steroids such as prednisolone, mometasone, beclomethasone
  • sympathomimetic medicines including epinephrine and dopamine used to treat heart attacks and low blood pressure
  • verapamil, rifampicin, cimetidine
  • dolutegravir, ranolazine, trimethoprim, vandetanib
  • isavuconazole, crizotinib, olaparib
  • Always take K MET exactly as your doctor has told you
  • Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water, do not chew

Recommended dose

  • Usually you will start treatment with 500 milligrams K MET
  • After you have been taking K MET for about 2 weeks, your doctor may measure your blood sugar and adjust the dose
  • The maximum daily dose is 2000 milligrams of K MET
  • Normally, you should take the tablets once a day, with your evening meal

If you take more K MET

  • If you have taken more K MET, than you should have, you may experience lactic acidosis. Talk to your doctor straight away

If you forget to take K MET

  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Take the next dose at the usual time
Very Rare

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Call your doctor right away if you have any of the following symptoms, which could be signs of lactic acidosis

  • dizzy or lightheaded
  • cold in your hands or feet
  • very weak or tired
  • slow or irregular heartbeat
  • trouble in breathing
  • stomach pains, nausea or vomiting
  • diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting
  • stomach ache or loss of appetite
  • changes in taste



  • low vitamin B12 levels in the blood
  • skin rashes including redness, itching and hives
  • hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) which may result in jaundice

What is type 2 diabetes

  • Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which your body does not make enough insulin, and the insulin that your body produces does not work as well as it should
  • Your body can also make too much sugar. When this happens, sugar (glucose) builds up in the blood. This can lead to serious medical conditions such as heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, and amputation
  • Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children
  • Do not use K MET after the expiry date
  • Store at room temperature (15-25°C)
