INTRODUCTION

HEP 5 contains Heparin which belongs to a group of medicines called anticoagulants which helps to stop blood clotting. It is used to treat and prevent blood clots in veins, lung, unstable angina pectoris, acute peripheral arterial occlusion and mural thrombosis. This medicine is also used during heart and lung operations and during kidney dialysis.

Heparin is an anticoagulant which acts indirectly by activating plasma antithrombin III (AT III, a serine proteinase inhibitor). This heparin-AT III complex then binds to clotting factors of the intrinsic and common pathways and inactivates them but not factor VIIa operative in the extrinsic pathway. Then it is exerted mainly by inhibition of factor Xa as well as thrombin (IIa) mediated conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin.

Before receiving HEP 5, tell your physician if you have liver, kidney or heart problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding. The common side effects are bleeding and red lumps or itchy patches like eczema. It must be avoided for premature and newborn babies.
