INTRODUCTION

GRANICIP INJECTION contains a medicine Granisetron which belongs to a group of medicines called Anti-emetics. It is used to prevent or treat nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting (being sick) caused by other medical treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer or by surgery.

Before receiving GRANICIP INJECTION inform your doctor if you have heart disease, blockage in your stomach or intestines, or electrolyte abnormalities.

GRANICIP INJECTION is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women. Consult with your doctor before receiving it. GRANICIP INJECTION should not be given to children below 2 years of age. GRANICIP INJECTION can be used in elderly people (65 years and older). However, consult with your doctor before receiving it.

The most common side effects of receiving GRANICIP INJECTION are headache, constipation, problems sleeping (insomnia), and diarrhoea. Consult with your doctor if any of these worsen or doesn’t improve.

USES OF GRANICIP INJECTION

Prevents or treats nausea and vomiting caused by,

  • chemotherapy or radiotherapy for cancer
  • surgery

HOW GRANICIP INJECTION WORKS

GRANICIP INJECTION acts by inhibiting a receptor called 5-HT3 receptor which is present both in the brain and gastrointestinal tract. This inhibition of 5-HT3 receptors in turn inhibits the stimulation of the vomiting centre, preventing nausea and vomiting.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

GRANICIP INJECTION will be given as an injection into the veins (intravenous) by your doctor or nurse. Your doctor will give the right dose depending on your age, body weight and health condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF GRANICIP INJECTION

COMMON

  • headache
  • constipation
  • problems sleeping (insomnia)
  • changes in liver function tests (pain in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, jaundice)
  • diarrhoea

RARE

Stop receiving GRANICIP INJECTION and inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • changes in the heartbeat, chest pain, irregular heartbeat and changes seen on ECG readings (electrical recordings of the heart)
  • swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips and mouth or throat, which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing
  • rash or itching
  • fainting
  • serotonin syndrome symptoms such as diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, high temperature and blood pressure, excessive sweating and rapid heartbeat, agitation, confusion, hallucination, shivering, muscle shakes, jerks or stiffness, loss of coordination and restlessness

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Diarrhoea:

Drink lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated. Do not consume any medicine on your own without consulting your doctor. Ask for your doctor’s advice if diarrhoea doesn’t improve.

Headache:

Try to take rest and don’t involve yourself in exertive activities. Rest in a quiet and dark room. Apply a pain-relieving balm on your forehead. Ask for your doctor’s advice if the headache doesn’t improve.

Constipation:

Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods such as vegetables, fresh fruits, and cereals and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly. Ask for your doctor’s advice if constipation doesn’t improve.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

GRANICIP INJECTION is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

BREASTFEEDING

GRANICIP INJECTION is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

GRANICIP INJECTION is not likely to affect your ability to drive or use any tools or machines.

ALLERGY

Do not receive GRANICIP INJECTION if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Granisetron or any other ingredients of this medicine.

HEART DISEASE

GRANICIP INJECTION should be used with caution in patients suffering from heart disease. Consult your doctor for advice before receiving this medicine.

OTHERS

Before receiving GRANICIP INJECTION, inform your doctor if you have:

  • blockage in the intestine (stomach-ache, wind, feeling or being sick, or difficulty passing stools)
  • electrolyte abnormalities (potassium, sodium, or calcium)
  • serotonin syndrome
  • been or are being treated for cancer with a medicine that might cause damage to your heart

Use in pediatrics:

GRANICIP INJECTION is not recommended for use in children below 2 years of age. Consult with your child’s doctor before giving this to your child.

Use in geriatrics:

GRANICIP INJECTION can be used in elderly people (65 years and older). However, consult with your doctor before receiving.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug - Drug interactions:

Before receiving GRANICIP INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • other 5-HT3 receptor antagonist such as dolasetron or ondansetron (used to treat and prevent nausea and vomiting)
  • diltiazem, amlodipine (medicines used to treat an irregular heartbeat)
  • phenobarbital (used to treat epilepsy)
  • ketoconazole (used to treat fungal infections)
  • paroxetine, sertraline, fluvoxamine, citalopram, venlafaxine, duloxetine, escitalopram (used to treat depression and/or anxiety)
  • erythromycin (used to treat certain bacterial infections)

Overdosage:

GRANICIP INJECTION will be administered only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse if there are any unusual symptoms such as headache.
