INTRODUCTION

GLUBOSE 25MG contain Acarbose which belongs to a group of medicine called glucosidase inhibitors. It is used to treat non-insulin dependent diabetes (Type 2 diabetes mellitus). It can be used to treat diabetes when a restricted diet alone or a restricted diet plus other sugar lowering drugs do not work well enough. It helps to control your blood sugar levels.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition where your body does not make enough insulin, or the insulin produced does not work and also make too much sugar. As a result, sugar gets builds up in the blood leading to various serious medical conditions. GLUBOSE 25MG works by slowing the action of certain chemicals that are involved in breakdown of food which release glucose into your blood. This helps keep blood glucose from rising very high after meals.

The common side effects are flatulence, diarrhoea, stomach pain. This medicine is strictly not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Check your blood sugar periodically as per the instruction of your doctor. Your doctor will monitor your diabetes with regular blood test including your blood sugar level and your hemoglobin A1C. Stay on your prescribed diet and exercise program while taking this medicine. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, heart disease, liver problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine.

HOW GLUBOSE 25MG WORKS

GLUBOSE 25MG works by slowing the action of certain chemicals that are involved in breakdown of food which release glucose into your blood. This helps keep blood glucose from rising very high after meals.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Always take GLUBOSE 25MG exactly as your doctor has told you. This medicine must be taken with food. Try to take this medicine at the same time each day. It should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.

SIDE EFFECTS OF GLUBOSE 25MG

COMMON

  • flatulence
  • diarrhoea
  • stomach pain

RARE

  • swelling
  • yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Diarrhoea:

Drink lots of fluids, such as water or squash, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any other medicines without speaking to a doctor.

Stomach pain:

Keep try to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly or have smaller and frequent meals. Keeping a heat p ad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may help. If still pain persists, speak to your doctor.

GLUBOSE 25MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

BREASTFEEDING

GLUBOSE 25MG is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

GLUBOSE 25MG is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machines.

ALCOHOL

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with GLUBOSE 25MG.

KIDNEY

GLUBOSE 25MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER

GLUBOSE 25MG is not recommended in patients with active liver diseases. Before taking, discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

ALLERGY

Do not take GLUBOSE 25MG if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Acarbose or any other ingredients in this medicine.

OTHERS

Tell your doctor if you have or had a condition such as,

  • inflammation or ulceration in the bowel (e.g. ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease)
  • an obstruction in your intestines
  • a large hernia
  • affect the enzyme levels in your blood

INTERACTIONS

Talk to your doctor if you are taking,

  • intestinal absorbents such as charcoal
  • digestive enzyme such as amylase and lipase (helps for digestion)
  • antibiotic such as neomycin (used to treat infection)
  • colestyramine (used to treat high cholesterol)
  • digoxin (used to treat heart problems)
  • blood glucose lowering medicine such as sulphonylureas, metformin or insulin

What will happen if more than the recommended dose of GLUBOSE 25MG is taken?

If you take more than the recommended dose of this medicine then it may cause temporary increase in flatulence, diarrhoea, and abdominal discomfort. It is advised to avoid meals or drinks containing carbohydrates for the next 4-6 hours.

Why does GLUBOSE 25MG cause flatulence?

It blocks the digestion of carbohydrates which causes accumulation of undigested carbohydrates in the colon. Bacterial fermentation of the accumulated carbohydrates causes intestinal gas leading to flatulence and abdominal pain.

What are the uses of GLUBOSE 25MG?

It is used to treat non-insulin dependent diabetes (Type 2 diabetes mellitus).
