What is Deflazacort used for?

Deflazacort is ananti-inflammatory agentused to treat a number of diseases with excessive inflammation in the body. They include inflammatory diseases such as asthma (lung inflammation), rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile chronic arthritis, rheumatic carditis, polymyalgia rheumatica, and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Deflazacort is asteroid medicineused to treat other inflammatory reactions such as allergies, anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) and sarcoidosis. This medicine is also prescribed for the inflammatory eye disorders such as uveitis and optic neuritis; inflammatory disease of the skin and muscle such as dermatomyositis; and inflammatory skin disorders such as pemphigus vulgaris, bullous pemphigoid and pyoderma gangrenosum.

Deflazacort is also animmunosuppressantthat can lower the white blood cells. Thus Deflazacort is used to suppress the immune system in organ transplant operations, which can help prevent the rejection of transplanted organs. Deflazacort is also indicated for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), autoimmune hepatitis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, immune thrombocytopenic purpura and polyarteritis nodosa.

Deflazacort is used to treat certain types of cancers such as acute and lymphatic leukemia, multiple myeloma (cancer of the bone marrow) and lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes).

Deflazacort belongs to a group of medicines called glucocorticoids. This medicine works by preventing the release of certain chemicals in the body, which cause inflammation.

Deflazacort may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How to take Deflazacort?

The dosage of Deflazacort prescribed to each patient will vary. Always follow your physician’s instructions and/or the directions on the prescription drug label.

Take Deflazacort tablet in the morning, or as directed by your physician. Deflazacort should be taken after your main meals.

If your physician has instructed or directed you to take Deflazacort medication in a regular schedule and you have missed a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the doses to catch up for the missed dose.

Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose of Deflazacort, seek medical attention immediately.

Deflazacort can interact with the following types of medicines: antacids, antidiabetic tablets, barbiturates, coumarin anticoagulants, high blood pressure medicines, diuretics, beta-agonists, oral contraceptives, tuberculosis medicines, salicylates, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, epilepsy medicines, estrogens and vaccines.

Usually drug interactions occur when it is taken with another drug or with food. Before you take a medication for a particular ailment, you should inform the health expert about intake of any other medications including non-prescription medications (over-the-counter products) and dietary supplements like vitamins, minerals and herbal, which may increase the effect of Deflazacort, so that the doctor can warn you of any possible drug interactions.

Do let your doctor know if you smoke, consume alcohol or caffeinated drinks, or use illegal drugs as these may interfere with the action of your medication. Make sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions you may have, or any family history of medical problems. Do not start or stop using any medicine without consulting your doctor.

What are the side effects of Deflazacort?

Like other medicines, Deflazacort can cause some side effects. If they do occur, the side effects of Deflazacort are most likely to be minor and temporary. However, some may be serious and may require the individual to inform the doctor or visit the nearest hospital immediately.

It is pertinent to note that side effects of Deflazacort cannot be anticipated. If any side effects of Deflazacort develop or change in intensity, the doctor should be informed as soon as possible.

While you are taking Deflazacort medicine, keep away from people who have infection such as chickenpox, measles or shingles.
