What EMPETUS 100MG is used for?

It is used:

  • to control HIV infection
  • in combination with other anti-HIV medicines (antiretrovirals) to control HIV infection

Talk to your Doctor, if you:

  • are allergic to ritonavir or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have severe liver or kidney disease
  • have hepatitis B or C
  • have haemophilia
  • have erectile dysfunction
  • have diabetes
  • EMPETUS 100MG can pass into breast milk, to avoid transmitting the infection, mothers with HIV must not breast feed their babies
  • If you are pregnant or breast feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • EMPETUS 100MG is not recommended in children below 2 years of age
  • Do not drive or operate any machines while taking this medicine as it may cause dizziness

Tell your doctor if you are taking,

  • astemizole or terfenadine, loratidine, fexofenadine (used to treat allergy symptoms)
  • amiodarone, bepridil, dronedarone, encainide, flecainide, propafenone, quinidine (used to correct irregular heartbeats)
  • dihydroergotamine, ergotamine (used to treat migraine headache)
  • ergonovine, methylergonovine (used to stop excessive bleeding that may occur following childbirth or an abortion)
  • medicines to treat psychotic disorders
  • ranolazine (used to treat chronic chest pain - angina)
  • pethidine, piroxicam, propoxyphene, buprenorphine (used to relieve pain)
  • cisapride (used to relieve certain stomach problems)
  • simvastatin, lovastatin, atorvastatin, rosuvastatin (used to lower blood cholesterol)
  • alfuzosin (used to treat enlarged prostate gland)
  • sildenafil, avanafil, vardenafil (used to treat erectile dysfunction)
  • colchicine (used to treat gout)
  • rifabutin, fusidic acid (used to treat infections)
  • voriconazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole (used to treat fungal infections)
  • digoxin (used to treat heart problems)
  • drugs used for hormonal therapy
  • rifampicin, bedaquiline, delamanid (used for tuberculosis)
  • bosentan, riociguat (used for pulmonary arterial hypertension)
  • afatinib, ceritinib, dasatinib, nilotinib, venetoclax, vincristine, vinblastine (used to treat cancer)
  • rivaroxaban, vorapaxar, warfarin (used to prevent blood clots)
  • antiretroviral medicines such as amprenavir, atazanavir
  • theophylline, salmeterol (used to treat asthma)
  • atovaquone (used to treat a certain type of pneumonia and malaria)
  • bupropion (used to help you stop smoking)
  • cyclosporine, tacrolimus, everolimus (immune system)
  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
  • Swallowed the whole and not chewed, broken or crushed

 If you take more EMPETUS 100MG

  • If you realize you have taken more tablets, than you were supposed to, contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital straight away
  • Symptoms of overdosage: numbness, tingling or a pins and needles sensation

If you forget to take EMPETUS 100MG

  • If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is nearly time for the next dose, just take that one. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose

If you stop taking EMPETUS 100MG

  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, flushing, feeling hot, headache, dizziness
  • pain in the throat, cough, upset stomach or indigestion
  • a tingling sensation or numbness in the hands, feet or around the lips and mouth
  • itching, rash, joint pain and back pain
  • severe swelling of the skin and other tissues
  • inability to sleep (insomnia), anxiety, increase in cholesterol, increase in triglycerides, gout, stomach bleeding, inflammation of the liver and yellowing of skin or whites of the eyes
  • increase in urination
  • seizures (fits)
  • low levels of blood platelets
  • thirst (dehydration)
  • abnormally heavy periods
  • wind (flatulence)
  • loss of appetite
  • mouth ulcer
  • fever
  • weight loss, confusion, difficulty paying attention, fainting
  • blurred vision
  • high blood pressure
  • low blood pressure and feeling faint when getting up
  • coldness in the hands and feet
  • heart attack
  • diabetes
  • kidney failure
  • blisters (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • high levels of sugar in the blood
  • joint stiffness, aches and pains (especially of the hip, knee and shoulder) and difficulty moving
  • hepatitis (inflammation of the liver)
  • muscle pain, tenderness or weakness
