INTRODUCTION

ELDOFEN 50MG contains Diclofenac which belongs to a group of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which used to reduce pain and inflammation. It is used to treat sprains, strains and other injuries, pain and inflammation following surgery, gout and other painful conditions affecting the joints and muscles such as backache, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and pyrophosphate arthropathy. It is also be used to relieve the symptoms associated with migraine attacks in adults.

Diclofenac is a NSAID which exhibits anti-inflammatory analgesic and antipyretic activities. It involves inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) and it is a potent inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis in vitro. Prostaglandins sensitize afferent nerves and potentiate the action of bradykinin in inducing pain and mediators of inflammation. Diclofenac is an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis, its mode of action may be due to a decrease of prostaglandins in peripheral tissues.

Always take ELDOFEN 50MG exactly as directed by your doctor. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have liver, kidney or heart problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is not recommended for children and adolescents below 14 years of age. The common side effects are stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and dizziness.

USES OF ELDOFEN 50MG

HOW ELDOFEN 50MG WORKS

ELDOFEN 50MG works by blocking the action of enzyme cyclooxygenase, which is required for the biosynthesis of prostaglandins.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Always take ELDOFEN 50MG exactly as your doctor has told you. Swallow this medicine with a glass of water and do not crush or chew. It can be taken with or without food.

SIDE EFFECTS OF ELDOFEN 50MG

SERIOUS

  • sudden and crushing chest pain
  • breathing difficulty when lying down
  • swelling of the feet or legs

COMMON

  • stomach pain
  • heartburn
  • nausea

  • raised levels of liver enzymes in the blood

  • bleeding in the stomach and intestine

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea:

Stick to simple normal meals and do not eat rich or spicy foods.

Headache:

Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Apply a cold, wet cloth or ice pack to your forehead. Rest in a quiet, comfortable, dark room.

Dizziness:

Get up and move around to feel awake, take small naps to edge off the sleepiness. Give your eyes a break to avoid fatigue and eat a healthy food to boost energy.

Vomiting:

Drink clear or ice-cold drinks. Eat light, bland foods and avoid fried, greasy, or sweet foods.

Diarrhoea:

Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. ORS should be used to prevent dehydration.

Stomach pain:

Place a warm water bottle on your abdomen. Soak in a warm bath. Drink plenty of clear fluids and water.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

ELDOFEN 50MG is not recommended for use in more than 6 months pregnant women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

BREASTFEEDING

ELDOFEN 50MG is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or handle any machines while taking this medicine as it may cause dizziness, tiredness, sleepiness or blurred vision.

KIDNEY

ELDOFEN 50MG is not recommended in patients with severe kidney failure or any active kidney diseases. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

LIVER

ELDOFEN 50MG is not recommended in patients with liver failure or any other active liver diseases. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

ALLERGY

Tell your doctor if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Diclofenac.

HEART DISEASE

ELDOFEN 50MG is not recommended in patients with severe heart failure, cerebrovascular disease or any other active heart diseases. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

OTHERS

Inform your doctor if you have or had,

  • stomach ulcer, perforation or bleeding
  • increase in blood pressure
  • blood circulation (peripheral arterial disease)
  • asthma
  • porphyria
  • are elder over 65
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, nasal polyps or hay fever
  • diabetes
  • angina
  • high cholesterol or triglycerides
  • bowel disorders such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease
  • systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

INTERACTIONS

Inform your doctor if you are using or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription or the following,

  • warfarin, heparin (used to treat blood clot)
  • aspirin or ibuprofen (used for inflammation or pain)
  • medicines to treat diabetes
  • diuretics
  • lithium, serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (used to treat anxiety and depression)
  • digoxin (used for heart problems)
  • methotrexate, ciclosporin, pemetrexed and tacrolimus (used for inflammation and cancers)
  • quinolone antibiotics (used to treat some infections)
  • mifepristone (used to terminate pregnancy)
  • zidovudine (used to treat HIV)
  • phenytoin (used to treat seizures)
  • colestipol and cholestyramine (used to treat cholesterol)
  • sulfinpyrazone and voriconazole
