INTRODUCTION
EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) contains Insulin lispro which belongs to the group of medicines called Antidiabetics. It is used in adults and children for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.
Diabetes mellitus is a disease where the body does not produce enough insulin to control the level of the blood sugar, due to which there is high blood sugar levels causing increased thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, irritability, blurred vision, slow-healing sores, frequent infections, increased ketone levels in urine.
Along with EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) treatment, your doctor might want you to make certain lifestyle changes like eating a healthy diet, not skipping meals, maintaining weight, quitting alcohol and smoking and exercising regularly.
Before taking EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO), inform your doctor if you have low blood sugar, kidney, liver or heart problems, if you exercise more, are ill or going abroad. Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO).
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO). Your doctor will prescribe the right dose of EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) for your child depending on their age, body weight and disease condition.
The most common side effects of taking EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) are skin allergy at injection site, pain, swelling, itching, redness, etc. Consult your doctor if symptoms do not reduce over time.

HOW EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) WORKS
EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) lowers blood glucose by enhancing uptake of glucose into skeletal muscle and adipose tissue and inhibiting the output of glucose from the liver.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) as advised by your physician. It should only be injected under the skin (subcutaneous injection). Do not administer EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) into a vein or muscle. The best areas to inject are the front of your waist (abdomen), upper arms, buttocks or the front of your thighs. EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) can be given at any time during the day, but at the same time each day.
Change the place within the area where you inject it every day to reduce the risk of developing changes under the skin. Your doctor will decide an appropriate dose and duration of EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition. Do not stop using EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) unless your doctor advises you to stop.
SIDE EFFECTS OF EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO)
COMMON
- low blood sugar levels (tiredness, fast heartbeat, nervousness, shakiness, nausea, headache, cold sweat)
- local reaction (redness, swelling or itching around the area of the insulin injection)
UNCOMMON
- lipodystrophy (fatty tissue at injection site may either shrink or thicken)
- cutaneous amyloidosis (lumps under the skin)
RARE
Stop taking EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- severe allergy (rash over the whole body, blood pressure dropping, difficulty in breathing, heart beating fast, wheezing, sweating)
- signs of heart failure (unusual shortness of breath or rapid increase in weight or localized swelling)
- diabetic ketoacidosis (sleepiness, no appetite, flushed face, fruity smelling breath, thirst, nausea, vomiting, heavy breathing, fast pulse)
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea or vomiting:
Take regular sips of a cold drink. Have ginger or peppermint tea. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy foods. If symptom persists, contact your doctor.
Headache:
Drink plenty of water and get adequate rest. Try to be relaxed and stress free. Call your doctor before taking any medicine for headache. If headache persists, consult your doctor.
Low blood sugar:
Drink a fruit juice or have eat glucose tablets, sugar or drink a sugary drink. Then eat fruit, biscuits or a sandwich, as advised by your doctor and have some rest. Check your blood sugar after 10 minutes. If it's still low, take another sugary snack or drink and check the blood sugar again. If the sugar levels do not improve, contact your doctor.

PREGNANCY
EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) should be used with caution in pregnant women. Dose will be adjusted by your doctor. Consult your doctor for advice.
BREASTFEEDING
EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Dose will be adjusted by your doctor. Consult your doctor for advice.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or use machines if your blood sugar levels drop while using EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) as it can affect your ability to concentrate or react.
ALCOHOL
Avoid consumption of alcohol while receiving EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) as it can raise or lower your blood sugar levels.
KIDNEY
EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor for advice.
LIVER
EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor for advice.
ALLERGY
Before taking EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO), inform your doctor if you are allergic to Insulin lispro or any of the other ingredients in this medicine.
HEART DISEASE
EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) should be used with caution in patients with heart disease or stroke. Consult your doctor for advice.
OTHERS
EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) is not recommended for use if you:
- have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
Before taking EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO), inform your doctor if you:
- have recently been ill
- are exercising more than usual
- are going abroad
- are visually impaired
Use in Pediatrics:
Your doctor will prescribe the right dose of EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) for your child depending on their age, body weight and disease condition.
Use in Geriatrics:
EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO) should be used with caution in elderly patients (above 65 years of age). Dose will be adjusted and regular blood and kidney tests will be conducted. Consult your doctor for advice.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug - Drug interactions:
Before taking EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO), inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- medicines used for birth control (Ex. desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol)
- medicines used to treat inflammation (Ex. prednisone, dexamethasone)
- medicines used to treat thyroid gland disorders (Ex. liothyronine, liotrix)
- other medicines for the treatment of diabetes (Ex. metformin, repaglinide, pioglitazone)
- acetylsalicylic acid (used to relieve pain and lower fever)
- medicines used to treat infections (Ex. sulfadiazine, sulfamethizole)
- octreotide (used in overproduction of growth hormone)
- medicines used to treat asthma (Ex. salbutamol, terbutaline)
- ritodrine (used to prevent premature labour)
- medicines used to treat certain heart conditions or high blood pressure (Ex. metoprolol, atenolol, enalapril, captopril, losartan)
- danazol (medicine acting on ovulation)
- monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) (used to treat depression) (Ex. phenelzine, selegiline)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO), consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are low blood sugar causing shallow breathing or pale skin.

What if I forget to take a dose of EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO)?
If you forget to take a dose of EGLUCENT KWIKPEN 100IU PEN(DISPO), your blood sugar may get too high (hyperglycemia). Fluctuations in your sugar levels may cause headaches, nausea, vomiting, loss of fluids (dehydration) or unconsciousness. See your doctor in such case.
