INTRODUCTION

EDOX DT 100MG TABLET contains Doxycycline which belongs to group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used for the treatment of various bacterial infections like that of chest, lung or nose (Ex. bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis), urinary tract (Ex. cystitis, urethritis), skin (Ex. acne), eyes or sexually transmitted diseases (Ex. gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia).

EDOX DT 100MG TABLET is also used to treat fevers associated with louse or tick bites and malaria (when chloroquine is ineffective). EDOX DT 100MG TABLET can also be used to prevent certain infections like scrub typhus (a disease carried by small insects), Rocky Mountain spotted fever, travellers’ diarrhoea, malaria and leptospirosis.

Avoid consumption of alcohol during treatment with EDOX DT 100MG TABLET, as it may reduce the efficacy of this medicine. Before taking EDOX DT 100MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you have myasthenia gravis, systemic lupus erythematosus, liver or kidney problems, porphyria, diarrhea or suspected syphilis.

EDOX DT 100MG TABLET is not recommended for use in women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast-feeding. EDOX DT 100MG TABLET should be used in children (8 years of age or less) only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

You should avoid exposure to strong sunlight while taking EDOX DT 100MG TABLET as your skin may be more sensitive to sunburn than normal. The most common side effects of taking EDOX DT 100MG TABLET are nausea, vomiting, joint pain, skin rash, fever, headache, etc. Consult your doctor if any of the symptoms get worse with time.

USES OF EDOX DT 100MG TABLET

It is used to

  • treat various bacterial infections like that of chest, lung or nose (Ex. bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis), urinary tract (Ex. cystitis, urethritis), skin (Ex. acne), eyes or sexually transmitted diseases (Ex. gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia)
  • treat fevers associated with louse or tick bites and malaria (when chloroquine is ineffective)
  • prevent certain infections like scrub typhus, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, travellers’ diarrhoea, malaria and leptospirosis

HOW EDOX DT 100MG TABLET WORKS

EDOX DT 100MG TABLET reduces bacterial infection by blocking protein synthesis of bacteria and thus preventing its growth.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take EDOX DT 100MG TABLET as advised by your physician. Do not crush or chew it. Swallow with a glass of water. The dose and duration will be determined by your doctor depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition. Do not stop taking EDOX DT 100MG TABLET unless your doctor advises you to stop.

SIDE EFFECTS OF EDOX DT 100MG TABLET

COMMON

  • nausea, vomiting
  • worsening of systemic lupus erythematous (allergic condition which causes joint pain, skin rash and fever)
  • headache
  • pericarditis (inflammation affecting the heart)

UNCOMMON

  • heartburn
  • vaginal infection

RARE

  • anxiety
  • trouble swallowing, sore or painful tongue or mouth
  • skin reddening (flushing)
  • a buzz or ringing sound in the ear
  • pain and itching of the rectal and/or genital area
  • inflammation of the bowel
  • soft spot-on head of infants
  • increased pressure in the head (severe headache with change in vision)
  • inflammation and damage to the liver, abnormal liver function tests
  • change in color of the thyroid tissue when given for long periods
  • nail loosening from the nail bed after sun exposure
  • increased blood urea levels
  • yellow skin and eyes, inflamed pancreas
  • darker patches on your skin

Stop taking EDOX DT 100MG TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • skin sensitivity to light (skin rash, itching, redness or severe sunburn when out in sunlight or after using a sun bed)
  • sudden wheeziness, trouble breathing, chest pain, fever, swelling of eyelids, face or lips, rash or itching (especially affecting the whole body)
  • serious bowel inflammation (upset stomach, loss of appetite, severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea associated with stomach pain or fever)
  • drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (fever, swollen lymph nodes, skin rash)
  • benign intracranial hypertension (headache, vomiting, visual disturbances including blurred or double vision, a localized defect in the visual field bordered by an area of normal vision and possible vision loss, in some cases, even permanent)
  • serious disorder with widespread severe blistering of the skin, mouth, eyes and genitals
  • Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (fever, chills, headache, muscle pain and skin rash that is usually self-limiting)
  • inflammation or ulcers of the gullet
  • blood disorders (tiredness, easy bruising, infections)
  • low blood pressure, increased heart rate
  • joint or muscle pain
  • stomach pain

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea and Vomiting:

Take EDOX DT 100MG TABLET with or just after meals. Avoid eating fried and greasy food. Take simple, light, small meals at frequent intervals. Drink plenty of fluids for optimum hydration. If symptom persists, contact your doctor.

Diarrhea:

Drink plenty of water, fluids and electrolytes such as ORS and stay hydrated. If symptom persists, contact your doctor.

Headache:

Drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated. Try to be tension free and relaxed. Take adequate sleep and rest. Avoid consumption of alcohol. Apply pain balm if required. If symptom persists, contact your doctor.

Light sensitivity:

Reduce exposure to sunlight. While going out, wear fully covering clothes and apply sunscreen with high SPF. If symptom persists, contact your doctor.

Skin rashes:

Do not scratch on rashes. Apply mild moisturizers if needed and avoid hot showers. Take an oatmeal bath. If symptom persists, contact your doctor.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

EDOX DT 100MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before taking it.

BREASTFEEDING

EDOX DT 100MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breast-feeding women. Consult your doctor before taking it.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

EDOX DT 100MG TABLET should not affect your ability to drive or use machines. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALCOHOL

Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking EDOX DT 100MG TABLET because it might reduce the efficacy of this medicine.

KIDNEY

EDOX DT 100MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor before taking it.

LIVER

EDOX DT 100MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking it.

ALLERGY

Do not take EDOX DT 100MG TABLET if you are allergic to doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline or any of the other ingredients of this medicine. Consult your doctor before taking it.

OTHERS

Before taking EDOX DT 100MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

  • are likely to be exposed to strong sunlight or UV light (Ex. on a sun bed)
  • have myasthenia gravis (disease which causes unusual tiredness and weakness of certain muscles, particularly in the eyelid)
  • have porphyria (rare blood disease)
  • have or had systemic lupus erythematosus (an immune system disease that causes joint pain, skin rashes and fever)
  • are suspected to have syphilis
  • have diarrhoea or usually get diarrhoea after taking antibiotics
  • have stomach or bowel problems
  • are about to have any operation or dental surgery

Use in Pediatrics:

EDOX DT 100MG TABLET should be used in children (8 years of age or less) only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Consult your child’s doctor for advice.

Use in Geriatrics:

EDOX DT 100MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (75 years and older). Consult your doctor before taking it.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug - Drug interactions:

Before taking EDOX DT 100MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • medicines used to prevent or treat acidity (Ex. aluminium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate)
  • bismuth subsalicylate (used to treat diarrhoea)
  • iron preparations, oral zinc (used to treat anemia)
  • medicines used to treat mood disorders and depression (Ex. phenobarbitone, pentobarbital)
  • medicines used to treat fits (Ex. phenytoin, carbamazepine)
  • medicines used to prevent blood clots (Ex. warfarin, hydroxycoumarin)
  • medicine used to prevent pregnancy (Ex. ethinylestradiol, norethindrone)
  • penicillin (used to treat bacterial infection)
  • ciclosporin (used to alter the body’s immune response)
  • medicines used to make you feel insensitive of pain (Ex. midazolam, desflurane)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of EDOX DT 100MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital.

Can EDOX DT 100MG TABLET cause diarrhea?

Diarrhea is a common problem caused by EDOX DT 100MG TABLET, which usually ends when the medicine is discontinued. Sometimes after starting the treatment, you might develop watery and bloody stools (with or without stomach cramps and fever) even as late as two or more months after having taken the last dose of EDOX DT 100MG TABLET. If this occurs, you should tell the doctor as soon as possible.

Can EDOX DT 100MG TABLET be used for common cold?

Patients should know that antibacterial drugs including EDOX DT 100MG TABLET should only be used to treat bacterial infections. They should not be used to treat viral infections like the common cold. Consult your doctor for further queries.

Can I stop taking EDOX DT 100MG TABLET if I feel better?

Do not stop taking EDOX DT 100MG TABLET unless your doctor advises you to stop. If you stop taking it early, the infection may return. Take EDOX DT 100MG TABLET for the full time of treatment, even if you begin to feel better.

What if I forget to take a dose of EDOX DT 100MG TABLET?

If you forget to take a dose of EDOX DT 100MG TABLET, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take EDOX DT 100MG TABLET two times to make up for the missed dose. Doubling the dose to make up for a missed dose would not substitute the missing amount but increase the risk of overdosing. Consult your doctor for further queries.

Does EDOX DT 100MG TABLET cause sensitivity to light?

Yes. Photosensitivity (light sensitivity) manifested by a worsening sunburn reaction has been observed in some patients taking EDOX DT 100MG TABLET. Patients prone to be exposed to direct sunlight or ultraviolet light should know that this reaction can occur with EDOX DT 100MG TABLET or similar medicines and treatment should be discontinued at the first evidence of skin redness.
