INTRODUCTION

DONYX contains Doxylamine which belongs to the group of medicines called Sedatives/Hypnotics. It is used for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It is a sleep disorder where you have trouble getting or staying asleep. Symptoms include daytime tiredness or sleepiness, difficulty paying attention or irritability.

DONYX is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver or kidney disease, fits, difficulty in passing urine or prostate problems, closed-angle glaucoma (increased pressure inside the eye) or narrowing or a blockage between the stomach and small intestine causing vomiting of undigested food.

DONYX should be used with caution in patients with breathing problems due to asthma, emphysema or chronic bronchitis and sleep apnea syndrome (breathing breaks during sleep). DONYX should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if clearly advised by the doctor.

DONYX is not recommended for use in children (below 12 years of age) and it should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above) due to the increased chance of getting side effects. The most common side effects of taking DONYX are dry mouth, drowsiness, headache, dizziness and muscle weakness. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects worsen.

USES OF DONYX

Used for short-term:

  • To treat insomnia

HOW DONYX WORKS

DONYX causes the central nervous system to slow down and thus provides relief from insomnia (sleeplessness).

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take DONYX as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the right dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF DONYX

COMMON

  • dry mouth, nose and throat
  • drowsiness, dizziness
  • headache
  • incoordination
  • muscle weakness
  • thicker nasal discharge

Stop taking DONYX and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • difficulty urinating, constipation
  • fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat
  • tremor, nervousness
  • restlessness, excitation
  • blurred vision, fainting
  • increased stomach reflux
  • insomnia (sleeplessness) for more than two weeks

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Headache:

Drink ample amount of water and avoid skipping meals. Get adequate rest. Try to be relaxed and stress-free. Apply pain relieving balm on your forehead if necessary. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Dizziness:

Lie down until dizziness is gone, then get up slowly. Move slowly and carefully, do not hurry. Get adequate rest. Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Avoid coffee, cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

Dry mouth:

Sip water regularly and other sugar-free liquids. Do not use mouthwashes that contain alcohol because they can make your mouth dry, use mouthwash that is used only for dry mouth. Limit your caffeine intake. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

PREGNANCY

DONYX should be used with caution in pregnant women only if advised by the doctor. Consult your doctor before taking it.

BREASTFEEDING

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

KIDNEY

DONYX is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney disease. Consult your doctor before taking it.

LIVER

DONYX is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking it.

ALLERGY

Do not take DONYX if you are allergic to Doxylamine, dimenhydrinate or similar medicines or any other ingredients of this medicine.

LUNGS

DONYX should be used with caution in patients with breathing problems such as asthma, emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Consult your doctor before taking it.

OTHERS

DONYX is not recommended for use if you:

  • have a narrowing or a blockage between the stomach and small intestine causing vomiting of undigested food
  • have fits
  • have difficulty in passing urine or prostate problems
  • have closed-angle glaucoma (increased pressure inside the eye)

Before taking DONYX, inform your doctor if you:

  • sleep apnea syndrome (breathing breaks during sleep)

Use in pediatrics:

DONYX is not recommended for use in children (below 12 years of age). Consult your child’s doctor for advice.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug - Drug interactions:

Before taking DONYX, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • opioid analgesics (Ex. codeine, morphine) used to relieve pain
  • hypnotics (Ex. temazepam, triazolam or nitrazepam) used to induce sleep
  • medicines used to treat anxiety (Ex. oxazepam, diazepam)
  • tricyclic anti-depressants such as amitriptyline, imipramine, nortriptyline, doxepin and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as moclobemide, phenelzine, tranylcypromine (used to treat depression)
  • medicines used to treat bacterial infections (Ex. tobramycin, gentamycin)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of DONYX, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are severe drowsiness, severe dryness of the mouth, nose and throat, redness in the face, pounding or irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, hallucination, sleeplessness, dilated pupils, fits or delirium (mental changes cause confusion or disorientation).
