INTRODUCTION

DALPIN 5000IU contains Dalteparin which belongs to a group of medicines called anti-thrombotic, which helps in the prevention of blood clots formation by thinning the blood. This medicine is used to prevent blood clots (venous thromboembolism).

The development of blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism), e.g. after surgery, prolonged bed rest or in patients with certain types of cancer is called venous thromboembolism. DALPIN 5000IU is a sterile, low molecular weight heparin with antithrombotic properties which works by decreasing the clotting ability of the blood.

DALPIN 5000IU will be administered by a doctor or nurse. Before receiving this medicine, tell your doctor if you have liver, kidney or heart problem, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. Your doctor will administer the right dose depends on your child’s age and body weight. The common side effects are bleeding or pain at the injection site.

USES OF DALPIN 5000IU

Used to prevent and treats,

  • blood clots (venous thromboembolism) forming before and after an operation or if you are bedridden due to illness and prevents their recurrence
  • deep vein thrombosis in patients bedridden due to a medical condition but not limited to heart failure and respiratory failure
  • solid tumours in patients suffering from low platelet counts

HOW DALPIN 5000IU WORKS

DALPIN 5000IU is a sterile, low molecular weight heparin with antithrombotic properties which works by decreasing the clotting ability of the blood.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

DALPIN 5000IU usually injected into a skin fold in your abdomen (stomach), or the outer aspects of thigh by a doctor or nurse. It should not be injected into your muscles.

SIDE EFFECTS OF DALPIN 5000IU

SERIOUS

  • breathing difficulty
  • swelling of the lips, mouth, throat or eyes

COMMON

  • reversible decrease in the number platelets in blood
  • bleeding
  • pain and reactions at the injection site
  • haematoma (clotting of blood under the skin)

RARE

  • a severe decrease in the number of clotting cells in blood (Type II thrombocytopenia)
  • alopecia (hair loss)
  • painful skin lesions

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

DALPIN 5000IU is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

BREASTFEEDING

DALPIN 5000IU should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

DALPIN 5000IU does not affect the ability to drive and handle machines.

KIDNEY

DALPIN 5000IU should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER

DALPIN 5000IU is not recommended in patients with active liver diseases or liver failure. Before taking, discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

ALLERGY

Tell your doctor if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Dalteparin.

OTHERS

Inform your doctor if you have or had,

  • stomach and duodenum ulcer (small intestine)
  • brain haemorrhage (bleeding in brain) or brain tumour
  • haemophilia
  • decrease in number of platelets (heparin-induced thrombocytopenia)
  • stroke caused by a bleed
  • eye disease caused by blood pressure or diabetes
  • uncontrolled high blood pressure

INTERACTIONS

Inform your physician if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription or the following,

  • aspirin, dipyridamole, glycoprotein receptor antagonists and warfarin (used to thin blood)
  • indometacin (used to reduce pain and inflammation)
  • sulfinpyrazone and probenecid (used for gout)
  • etacrynic acid (used for water retention)
  • dextrans (increase the blood volume)
  • cytostatics (used for cancer)
  • TPA-tissue plasminogen activator
  • Antihistamines (for allergy and hay fever )
  • digoxin or digitoxin (used for heart or circulation problems )
  • tetracyclines, penicillin (used to treat bacterial infections)
  • Vitamin C
  • intravenous nitroglycerine (used to treat angina)
  • quinine (used to treat malaria)
