INTRODUCTION

COLISTOP contains Colistin which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used in infants and in children to treat bacterial infections of the gut (stomach and intestines).

Colistin is a polypeptide antibiotic. It binds to the susceptible bacteria and disrupts the composition (lipids and protein) of the bacterial cell membrane. As a result, it makes the contents of the bacterial cell to leak out which subsequently leads to bacterial killing. It may also inactivate the toxins produced by the bacteria.

Before starting the therapy with COLISTOP, inform your doctor if your child has any kidney problems. Your doctor would prescribe a low dose of colistin to your child and constantly monitor their kidney functions to avoid the risk of side effects. You must also inform your doctor that if your child has any inherited blood or muscle disorders before starting the therapy with COLISTOP.
