INTRODUCTION

CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) contains Zuclopenthixol which belongs to the group of medicine called neuroleptic agents. It is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic illnesses. Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder characterized by extremely disordered thinking, hallucinations, delusions and abnormal behavior which affects your daily functioning.

This medicine acts on nerve pathways in specific areas of the brain and restores the balance of certain chemical substance (neurotransmitters) in the brain that causes the symptoms of schizophrenia and other mental illness. Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol while taking this medicine as it may increase the side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness.

Take CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) continuously at regular intervals even if you feel completely well, because the underlying illness may persist for a long time. The most common side effects of taking this medicine are injection site reactions, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, mental problems and muscle pain. They are usually temporary and disappears with time.

Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have any lung, liver, kidney or heart problems. If you are pregnant, or think you may be pregnant or breastfeeding, inform your doctor before taking this medicine as a precaution. CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) is strictly not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Consult your doctor before taking.

HOW CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) WORKS

Zuclopenthixol is a typical antipsychotic medicine that works by restoring the balance of certain chemical substance (neurotransmitters) in the brain. It exerts its actions by antagonizing the effects of dopamine by blocking the D1 and D2 dopamine receptors which improves the symptoms of schizophrenia, making it easier to function in everyday life.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

This medicine will be given to you only by a doctor or nurse into the muscles (intramuscularly) of your thighs or buttocks. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, weight and mental condition. Continue to take this medicine, as long as your doctor tells you to do so, to obtain better results.

SIDE EFFECTS OF CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT)

SERIOUS

  • allergic skin reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat and difficulty in breathing)
  • thrombophlebitis (blood clot in vein causing redness and swelling with pain)
  • thromboembolism (blood clot in the lungs)
  • signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (fever, unusual stiffness of muscles and changes in consciousness, especially with sweating and fast heart rate)
  • symptoms of tardive dyskinesia (unusual movements of the mouth and tongue)
  • signs of an extra-pyramidal reaction (such as stiffness, tremor, unusual muscle movement, difficulty in sitting or standing)
  • jaundice (yellowing of skin and white of your eyes)

COMMON

  • injection site reaction (redness, pain and swelling)
  • irregular heartbeat
  • dizziness or drowsiness
  • abnormal vision
  • paresthesia (numbness or tingling in arms and the legs)
  • tremor, loss of memory, confusion, poor concentration
  • tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or vertigo
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
  • dry mouth, blocked nose
  • increased salivation
  • skin rash or itching
  • muscle pain
  • increased urination
  • general weakness or pain
  • tiredness or feeling unwell
  • insomnia, abnormal dreams or nightmares
  • depression, anxiety, nervousness, apathy
  • increased appetite, weight gain

RARE

  • thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, leukopenia, agranulocytosis
  • increased prolactin levels in blood
  • increased blood glucose levels
  • changes in sex drive or problems in ejaculation in men
  • breast enlargement in men
  • menstrual problems in women

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea or vomiting:

Stick to simple meals. Do not eat rich or spicy food.

Constipation: 

Eat fibre rich foods like fresh fruit, vegetables and cereals. Drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly.

Diarrhea:

Drink lots of fluids, such as water or juice, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any medicines without speaking to a doctor.

Dizziness or drowsiness:

Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid traveling, driving or operating any tools or machines while you are feeling dizzy. If the symptom still persists, contact your doctor for advice.

Weight gain:

Try to exercise more regularly, for e.g., by going for a daily walk or run.

Skin rash or itching:

Avoid hot showers because hot water can irritate the skin. Do not rub or scratch the affected area. Use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Regularly use moisturizers to soothe and hydrate the affected area. If it does not get better, contact your doctor.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

BREASTFEEDING

CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate any machines because this medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision.

ALCOHOL

Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking this medicine, as it may make you feel too much drowsy.

KIDNEY

CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) should be taken with caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER

CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) should be taken with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to zuclopenthixol or other thioxanthene drugs.

LUNGS

CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) should be taken with caution in patients having severe breathing problems (such as asthma or bronchitis). Consult your doctor for advice before taking.

HEART DISEASE

CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) should be taken with caution in patients having irregular heartbeat, recent heart attack, ankle swelling or shortness of breath. Consult your doctor for advice before taking.

OTHERS

Before taking CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT), inform your doctor if you:

  • have thyroid problems
  • have epilepsy or at risk of fits due to brain injury or alcohol withdrawal
  • have Parkinson’s disease
  • have myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness)
  • have an enlarged prostate
  • have pheochromocytoma (a rare type of cancer of adrenal glands)
  • have glaucoma (increased pressure in your eyes)
  • have any risk factors for stroke (such as high blood pressure or smoking)
  • have hypokalemia (decreased potassium levels in blood)
  • have decreased magnesium levels in your blood
  • have diabetes
  • have or have a family history of blood clots
  • have any type of cancer
  • are going for a surgery

INTERACTIONS

Talk to your doctor, if you are taking,

  • medicines used to treat an abnormal heartbeat
  • other antipsychotic medicines used to treat mental illness
  • tricyclic antidepressants (used to treat depression) e.g. fluoxetine, sertraline
  • medicines that induces sleep or make you feel drowsy (e.g. phenobarbital, diazepam, clonazepam)
  • anticoagulant (used to prevent blood clots) e.g. warfarin
  • anticholinergic medicines used to treat allergy, cold or travel sickness (e.g. dicyclomine, ipratropium bromide, atropine)
  • metoclopramide (used to treat nausea and other stomach problems)
  • piperazine (used to treat worm infections)
  • medicines used to treat Parkinson’s disease (e.g. levodopa and carbidopa)
  • sibutramine (used to reduce appetite)
  • corticosteroids (used to treat pain and inflammation) e.g. prednisolone
  • medicines used to treat hypertension (e.g. hydralazine, alpha blockers (e.g. doxazosin), beta-blockers (e.g. propranolol, atenolol), methyldopa, clonidine or guanethidine)
  • medicines that causes salt-water imbalance (e.g. spironolactone)
  • medicines used to treat epilepsy (e.g. phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproic acid)
  • medicines used to treat diabetes (e.g. metformin, insulin)
  • adrenaline (used to treat septic shock)

Can CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) be injected in the deltoid muscle?

It is not meant for self-administration. It will be given to you only by a doctor or nurse into the muscles (intramuscularly) of your thighs or buttocks. However, consult your doctor whether it can be injected into the deltoid muscles.

Can CLOPIXOL 200MG (DEPOT) be used to treat mental problems in children?

It is strictly not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Consult your doctor before taking.
