INTRODUCTION
CLAVIDUR XR TABLET is a combination of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid, which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used for treating bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia and acute bacterial sinusitis.
Community-acquired pneumonia is an infection that leads to the inflammation of the air sacs involving one or both lungs. It is characterized by the symptoms such as chest pain, cough with phlegm, fatigue, fever, sweating, and chills. Acute bacterial sinusitis is a condition occurring due to infection and inflammation in the nasal cavity and sinuses. It is characterized by symptoms such as a stuffy nose, difficulty breathing through your nose, pain and pressure around your eyes, nose, or/and forehead.
Do not take CLAVIDUR XR TABLET if you have a history of penicillin or cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction upon taking amoxicillin-clavulanate. Before taking CLAVIDUR XR TABLET, inform your doctor if you have a hepatic impairment, renal impairment or mononucleosis. It should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women. It should be used with caution in children and adolescents (aged 15 years or below) and elderly patients (aged 65 years or above). Consult your doctor before taking it.
The common side effects associated with the use of CLAVIDUR XR TABLET are diarrhoea, vaginal mycosis, nausea, or loose stools. Contact your doctor immediately if any of your symptoms get worse or persist.

HOW CLAVIDUR XR TABLET WORKS
CLAVIDUR XR TABLET helps in treating bacterial infection where amoxicillin is a penicillin that works by inhibiting the enzymes that help in the synthesis of integral structural components of the bacterial cell wall whereas clavulanic acid is a beta-lactam (structurally related to penicillin) that works by inactivating an enzyme, namely beta-lactamase, thereby preventing the inactivation of amoxicillin.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take CLAVIDUR XR TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the tablet with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition.
SIDE EFFECTS OF CLAVIDUR XR TABLET
COMMON
- diarrhoea
- vaginal mycosis
- nausea
- loose stools
UNCOMMON
- skin rash
- itching
- raised itchy rash (hives)
RARE
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a skin rash with severe blisters)
- interstitial nephritis (inflammation in the kidney tissue)
- haematuria (blood in urine)
Stop taking CLAVIDUR XR TABLET and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:
- skin rashes
- itching
- urticaria (allergic reactions characterized by itchy welts)
- angioedema (severe allergic reactions characterized by swelling in face and mouth)
- serum sickness-like reactions (urticaria or skin rash accompanied by bone pain, joint pain, muscle pain and frequent fever)
- erythema multiforme (a skin rash that looks like small targets)
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a skin rash with severe blisters)
- acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (skin inflammation with pustules)
- signs of hypersensitivity vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels) such as raised red or purple spots on the skin
- exfoliative dermatitis including toxic epidermal necrolysis (skin reactions causing severe blistering and skin peeling)
- signs of suprainfection
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Diarrhoea
Drink lots of fluids, such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to treat diarrhoea and consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.
Nausea
Try to take CLAVIDUR XR TABLET with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

PREGNANCY
CLAVIDUR XR TABLET should be used with caution in pregnant women only if it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking it.
BREASTFEEDING
CLAVIDUR XR TABLET should be used with caution in pregnant women only if it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking it.
KIDNEY
CLAVIDUR XR TABLET should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment. Consult your doctor before taking it.
LIVER
CLAVIDUR XR TABLET is not recommended for use if you have if you have history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction upon taking amoxicillin-clavulanate. It should be used with caution in patients with hepatic impairment. Consult your doctor before taking it.
ALLERGY
Do not take CLAVIDUR XR TABLET if you are allergic to penicillin or any other ingredients of this medicine.
OTHERS
Before taking CLAVIDUR XR TABLET, inform your doctor if you:
- have mononucleosis (a viral infection)

CLAVIDUR XR TABLET should be used with caution in children and adolescents (aged 15 years or below). Consult your doctor before taking it.

INTERACTIONS
A. Drug-Drug Interactions
Before taking CLAVIDUR XR TABLET, inform your doctor, if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- allopurinol, probenecid (medicine used to treat gout)
- warfarin (medicine used to delay blood clotting)
- oral contraceptives (medicines used to prevent conception) Ex. oestrogen
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of CLAVIDUR XR TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are gastrointestinal symptoms including abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, rashes, hyperactivity, or drowsiness. It may also cause interstitial nephritis (inflammation in kidney tissue) or crystalluria resulting in renal failure in few cases.
