INTRODUCTION

CIPLOX INFUSION contains ciprofloxacin, which belongs to the group of medicines called fluoroquinolone antibiotics. It is used in the treatment of bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, recurring ear and acute sinus infections, urinary tract infections, genital tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bones or joint infection and anthrax, etc.

Before receiving CIPLOX INFUSION, inform your doctor if you are having kidney problems, neurological conditions, or heart diseases such as a tear in the aortic wall of the heart, bulge or large blood vessels, leaking in the heart valves and congenital heart disease or myasthenia gravis. CIPLOX INFUSION should preferably be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. CIPLOX INFUSION should be used with caution in elderly patients.

The most common side effects of receiving CIPLOX INFUSION are reactions at the injection site, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Consult a doctor immediately if any of the symptoms worsen.

USES OF CIPLOX INFUSION

CIPLOX INFUSION is used in adults to treat bacterial infections of the following:

  • respiratory tract infections
  • recurring ear and sinusitis infections
  • urinary tract infections
  • genital tract infections
  • gastrointestinal tract infections
  • intraabdominal infections
  • skin and soft tissue infections
  • bone and joint infections
  • management for fever in neutropenia-associated infection

CIPLOX INFUSION is used in children and adolescents to treat the following:

  • lung and bronchial infections with cystic fibrosis
  • complicated urinary tract infections, including infections that have reached the kidneys (pyelonephritis)

CIPLOX INFUSION is used in the treatment of anthrax inhalation exposure in both children and adults.

HOW CIPLOX INFUSION WORKS

[GBNKEYWOED] is an antibacterial agent that acts by preventing bacterial replication by targeting the essential enzyme inside the bacteria. This leads to the restriction of growth of the disease-causing bacteria inside the infected person and thereby CIPLOX INFUSION helps to control the infection and treat its symptoms caused by it.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

CIPLOX INFUSION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into a vein as an intravenous infusion. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF CIPLOX INFUSION

COMMON

  • nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting
  • joint pain and joint inflammation in children
  • reaction at the injection site
  • skin rash
  • temporary increase in the level of substances in the blood (transaminases)

UNCOMMON

  • joint pain
  • fungal superinfections (severe fungal infections)
  • high concentration of eosinophils (type of white blood cell)
  • increase or decrease in amounts of blood clotting factor (thrombocytes)
  • loss of appetite
  • hyperactivity, agitation, confusion, disorientation, hallucinations
  • headache, dizziness, sleeping problems
  • pins and needles, taste disorders
  • unusual sensitivity to stimuli of senses (Hyperesthesia)
  • giddiness, seizures
  • eyesight problems including double vision
  • loss of hearing
  • rapid heartbeat (tachycardia)
  • expansion of blood vessels (vasodilation)
  • low blood pressure
  • abdominal pain
  • digestive problems such as stomach upset, indigestion, heartburn, and wind
  • liver disorders, increased amount of bilirubin in blood
  • jaundice (cholestatic icterus)
  • itching, hives
  • poor kidney function, kidney failure
  • pains in your muscles and bones, feeling unwell (asthenia)
  • fever, fluid retention
  • increase in blood alkaline phosphatase (a certain substance in blood)

RARE

  • muscle pain, inflammation of the joints, increased muscle tone and cramping
  • inflammation of the bowel (colitis) due to antibiotic use
  • changes in the blood count (leukopenia, leucocytosis, neutropenia, anaemia)
  • drop in number of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets (pancytopenia)
  • bone-marrow depression
  • allergic reaction, swelling (oedema)
  • rapid swelling of the skin and mucous membranes (angioedema)
  • increased blood sugar level (hyperglycaemia)
  • decreased blood sugar level (hypoglycaemia)
  • anxiety reaction, strange dreams, depression
  • mental disturbances (psychotic reactions leading to suicidal thoughts, suicidal attempts, or completed suicide)
  • decreased skin sensitivity, tremor, migraine, disorder of sense of smell (olfactory disorders)
  • tinnitus, impaired hearing, fainting
  • inflammation of the blood vessel (vasculitis)
  • shortness of breath including asthmatic symptoms
  • pancreatitis, hepatitis, death of liver cells (liver necrosis)
  • sensitivity to light, pin-point bleeding under the skin (petechiae)
  • blood or crystals in urine, urinary tract inflammation
  • excessive sweating
  • increased levels of enzyme amylase
  • Pain and swelling in the joints, and inflammation or rupture of tendons
  • nerve damage (neuropathy) such as pain, burning sensation, tingling, numbness, and weakness especially in the feet and legs or hands and arms

Stop receiving CIPLOX INFUSION and inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects

  • severe allergic reaction with symptoms such as tightness in the chest, feeling dizzy, feeling sick, faint, and experience dizziness while standing
  • severe pain in your abdomen, chest or back, which can be symptoms of an aortic aneurysm and dissection
  • sudden shortness of breath, especially when lying down flat
  • swelling of ankles, feet, or abdomen,
  • rapid irregular heartbeat
  • cerebral ischemia (low blood flow to the brain) or stroke, seizure (fits)
  • impairment of the eyesight

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea and vomiting:

Medicine must be preferably received just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy foods.

Diarrhoea:

Keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of fluids, such as coconut water or fruit. Do not take any medicine on your own without your doctor’s opinion as it may interact with the medicine you have received. Inform your doctor if the loose motions do not stop or worsen with time.

Skin rash:

Apply calamine lotion or aloe vera to calm your skin. Try to avoid having hot showers/baths as it can irritate your skin further. Do not scratch the affected area. Use protective clothing when going outdoors and apply sunscreen. Regularly moisturize your skin.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

CIPLOX INFUSION is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before receiving CIPLOX INFUSION.

BREASTFEEDING

CIPLOX INFUSION is generally not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through breast milk and could be harmful to the baby. Consult your doctor before receiving CIPLOX INFUSION.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or use machinery after receiving CIPLOX INFUSION as the medicine could cause neurological disturbances and can make you less alert. Consult your doctor before receivingCIPLOX INFUSION.

ALCOHOL

Avoid consumption of alcohol while receiving CIPLOX INFUSION because it can make you dizzier.

KIDNEY

CIPLOX INFUSION should be given with caution in patients with severe kidney problems. Consult your doctor before receiving CIPLOX INFUSION.

LIVER

CIPLOX INFUSION is not recommended in patients with liver damage. Consult your doctor before receiving CIPLOX INFUSION.

ALLERGY

Do not receive CIPLOX INFUSION if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics or to any other ingredients in this medicine.

HEART DISEASE

CIPLOX INFUSION should be given with caution in patients suffering from heart problems such as prolonged QT interval (seen on ECG, electrical recording of the heart), having very slow heart rhythm (bradycardia), weak heart (heart failure), history of heart attack, leaking of heart valves, tearing in the aortic wall, bulging of a large blood vessel, and congenital heart valve disease. Consult your doctor before receiving CIPLOX INFUSION.

OTHERS

CIPLOX INFUSION is not recommended for use if you suffer from

  • fits (epilepsy) or other neurological conditions
  • depression or psychosis

Before receiving CIPLOX INFUSION, inform your doctor if you have:

  • tendon problems during previous treatment with antibiotics
  • a history of diabetes
  • a disease that causes muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis)
  • a deficiency in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), since it could cause a risk of anaemia
  • a history of connective tissue disorder such as Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
  • Turner syndrome (chromosomal defect)
  • Sjogren’s syndrome (an inflammatory autoimmune disease)
  • blood related disorders Ex. Takayasu arteritis, giant cell arteritis
  • Behcet’s disease (blood vessel inflammation throughout your body)
  • rheumatoid arthritis (autoimmune disease of the joints)
  • endocarditis (an infection of the heart)

Use in paediatrics:

CIPLOX INFUSION should be given with caution in children and adolescents (under 18 years of age). Consult before receiving CIPLOX INFUSION.

Use in geriatrics:

CIPLOX INFUSION should be given with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before receiving CIPLOX INFUSION.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before receiving CIPLOX INFUSION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • vitamin K antagonists (Ex. warfarin, acenocoumarin, phenprocoumon or fluindione)
  •  other oral anti-coagulants (medicine used to thin the blood such as warafrin
  •  probenecid (medicine used to treat gout)
  • methotrexate (medicine used to treat certain types of cancer, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis)
  • theophylline (medicine used for the treatment of breathing problems)
  • tizanidine (medicine used to treat muscle spasticity in multiple sclerosis)
  • olanzapine, clozapine, risperidone (medicine used to treat psychosis)
  • ropinirole (medicine used to treat parkinson’s disease)
  • phenytoin (medicine used to treat epilepsy (fits))
  • cyclosporin (medicine used to treat skin conditions, rheumatoid arthritis and organ transplantation)
  • other medicines that can alter your heart rhythm (Ex. quinidine, hydroquinone, disopyramide, amiodarone, sotalol, dofetilide, ibutilide)
  • tricyclic antidepressants (medicine used to treat depression such as amoxapine)
  • some antimicrobials (that belong to the group of macrolides such as azithromycin)
  • zolpidem (medicine used to treat sleep disorders)
  • pentoxifylline (medicine used in the treatment of circulatory disorders)
  • caffeine (medicine used to stimulate the central nervous system)
  • duloxetine (medicine used to treat depression, diabetic nerve damage or incontinence)
  • lidocaine (medicine used to treat heart conditions or anesthetic use)
  • sildenafil medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction)
  • agomelatine (medicine used to treat depression)

Overdosage:

CIPLOX INFUSION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. In case if you experience any unusual symptoms, consult your doctor immediately or visit a nearby hospital.
