What CARPINOL is used for?

It is used,

  • to induce miosis (excessive constriction of the pupil) during cataract surgery with intraocular lens implant
  • to treat glaucoma, and for dry mouth (xerostomia) in patients with Sjogren's syndrome
  • as an antidote for alkaloid drug poisoning

  • are allergic to pilocarpine or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
  • are suffering from inflammation of part of the eye (acute iritis or anterior uveitis)
  • are suffering from eye disorders such as narrow angle glaucoma or secondary glaucoma
  • are wearing soft contact lenses
  • are suffering from any heart problems
  • have asthma
  • have Parkinson’s disease
  • have problems in passing urine
  • have high blood pressure
  • are an alcoholic

Tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines including:

  • antihistamines (medicines used to treat allergies)
  • anticholinesterases, (such as neostigmine) medicines that affect the muscles and are used to treat diseases like myasthenia gravis
  • atropine and phenylephrine (medicines used to make the pupil larger)
  • orphenadrine, procyclidine and trihexyphenidyl (medicines used to treat parkinson’s disease)
  • amitriptyline and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, phenothiazines (medicines to treat mental problems)
  • chlorpromazine
  • guanethidine (medicines used to treat high blood pressure)

COMMON

RARE

  • itching, smarting and a burning sensation around the eye
  • a red skin rash with itching (urticaria)
  • swelling, redness or soreness of the eyelid
  • swelling of the front of the eye (conjunctiva)
  • temporarily blurred vision or short sightedness
  • enlargement of the veins in the eye
  • headache (especially in young patients at the beginning of treatment)
  • bleeding within the front of the eye
