BACSTOL 100MG contains Trimethoprim which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to treat bacterial infections of the urinary tract and the respiratory tract. It can also be used to prevent recurrent urinary tract infections.
Trimethoprim is a potent antibacterial agent. It kills the susceptible bacteria by preventing the production of certain substances (folic acid) within the bacterial cell which is required for its growth and survival.
Take the full course of BACSTOL 100MG without any interruption. Before taking BACSTOL 100MG, inform your doctor if you have any problems in your kidneys. You must also inform your doctor if you have folic acid deficiency, porphyria (inherited blood disorder) or uncontrollable diabetes before taking BACSTOL 100MG as a precaution.
BACSTOL 100MG is not recommended for use in patients with serious liver problems or anemia. It is also not suitable for use in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and in children (aged below 6 years, including infants aged below 4 months).
BACSTOL 100MG may cause anemia or hyperkalemia (high blood potassium levels) in some individuals. To avoid this, your doctor will periodically monitor your RBC count and blood potassium levels as a precaution.
Other most common side effects of taking BACSTOL 100MG are headache, skin rashes, thrush, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Contact your doctor if any of these side effect worsens.
BACSTOL 100MG is an antifolate antibacterial agent. It kills the susceptible bacteria by blocking the actions of an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase which is essential for the formation of certain substances (folic acid) in the bacterial cell that gives them energy for growth and multiplication. As a result, it stops the bacteria from growing, and prevents the infection from spreading.
Take BACSTOL 100MG as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and severity of the infection.
It is important to take the full course of BACSTOL 100MG without any interruption. Therefore, do not miss a dose or stop taking BACSTOL 100MG without consulting your doctor as it may lead to growth of harmful bacteria within the body which cannot be further controlled by BACSTOL 100MG.
Stop taking BACSTOL 100MG and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects such as:
Headache:
Rest and relax. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if required. Do not consume alcohol. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.
Nausea and Vomiting:
Take BACSTOL 100MG with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.
Diarrhea:
Hydrate yourself by drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or fruit juices. Consuming ORS can also be beneficial. Do not self-treat diarrhea on your own. Consult your doctor if your diarrhea becomes uncontrollable.
BACSTOL 100MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
BACSTOL 100MG is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
BACSTOL 100MG does not affect your ability to drive or operate any heavy tools or machinery. However, if you experience any unpleasant symptoms after taking BACSTOL 100MG, do not drive or operate heavy tools or machinery.
BACSTOL 100MG should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems (such as dialysis). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
