INTRODUCTION

AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION is a combination of Ampicillin and Cloxacillin which belongs to the group of medicines called Penicillin Antibiotics. It is used to treat respiratory tract infections, bacterial meningitis, septicaemia, endocarditis, urinary tract infections, pelvic infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal infections, infected wounds or lung infections after surgery, puerperal fever, ear, nose and throat infections in moderately severe and severe infections and for patients who are unable to take the oral forms.

Before receiving AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease. AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in pregnant women. Contact your doctor before receiving.

AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION is generally not recommended for use in breast feeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Contact your doctor before receiving.

USES OF AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION

It is used for:

  • respiratory tract infections
  • stomach infection
  • urinary tract infections
  • fever associated with bacterial infection
  • blood poisoning, caused by bacteria and inflammation of the endocardium

HOW AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION WORKS

AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION is a combination of Ampicillin and cloxacillin where ampicillin (has a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. It acts through the inhibition of cell wall mucopeptide biosynthesis during the stage of active multiplication.) Cloxacillin prevents bacteria from reproducing, which allows your body to fight only the existing bacteria.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION will be administered into a vein or muscle as intravenously or intramuscularly. Your doctor will administer the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

COMMON

  • nausea

RARE

Stop receiving AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • allergic reaction such as rash, itching, skin redness, sneezing, swelling of face, lips and tongue, body causing trouble breathing
  • rash or pinpoint flat red round spots under the skin surface or bruising of the skin due to inflammation of blood vessel caused by an allergic reaction, along with joint pains and kidney problems
  • delayed allergic reaction signs include rashes, fever, joint pains and enlargement of the lymph nodes especially under the arms
  • skin reaction such as erythema multiforme, itchy reddish-purple patches on the skin especially on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, hive-like raised swollen areas on the skin, tender areas on the surfaces of the mouth, eyes and private parts, fever and tiredness
  • mild itchy rash (round-red patches), hive-like swollen areas on forearms, legs, palms, hands or feet
  • other severe skin reactions such as changes in skin colour, bumps on the skin, blistering, pustules, peeling, redness, pain, itching, scaling
  • fever, chills, headache, body pains, sore throat or other signs of an infection or bruise easily
  • inflammation of the large intestine (colon) with diarrhoea sometimes containing blood, pain and fever
  • yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes, severe diarrhoea with bleeding, blisters, redness or bruising of the skin, darker urine or paler stools
  • anaemia
  • interstitial nephritis
  • weakness, weight loss, malaise
  • difficulty in hearing
  • decrease in white blood cell count and red blood cell count or platelet count

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea or Vomiting:

Receive this medicine with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy foods.

Diarrhoea:

Drink lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juices to keep you hydrated. Do not take any medicine on your own for treating diarrhea. Contact your doctor if the symptom did not improve.

Stomach pain:

Try to rest and relax. Eat small meals but take frequently. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor.

Flatulence:

Eat smaller and frequent meals. Eat and exercise regularly. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor.

Skin rash:

Avoid hot showers because hot water can further irritate your skin. Do not scratch the affected area. Use protective clothing when going outdoors. Regularly moisturize your skin. Contact your doctor if the symptoms did not resolve.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. . Contact your doctor before receiving.

BREASTFEEDING

AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION may excrete in trace amounts in human milk. Safety has not been established in lactating mothers. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION has no adverse effects on the ability to drive or operate machinery. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

KIDNEY

AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Contact your doctor before receiving.

LIVER

AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Contact your doctor before receiving.

ALLERGY

Do not receive AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION if you are allergic to Ampicillin, Cloxacillin or beta-lactam antibiotics (Ex. penicillins, cephalosporins) or to other ingredients of this medicine.

OTHERS

Before receiving AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION, inform your doctor if you:

  • have glandular fever and/or leukaemia
  • have blood related disorder/disease
  • have diabetes
  • have HIV infections
  • have low immunity
  • are on low salt diet

Use in pediatrics:

Experience in premature and new born infants is limited. Cautious administration of the AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION to such patients and frequent evaluation of organ system function is recommended. Contact your doctor before receiving.

Use in geriatrics:

AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above). Contact your doctor before receiving.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Inform your physician, if you are taking,

  • medicines used to treat gout (Ex. probenecid, allopurinol)
  • methotrexate (used for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis or cancer)
  • medicines used to prevent pregnancy (Ex. oral contraceptives)
  • medicines used to treat bacterial infections (Ex. amikacin, gentamycin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, sulphonamides and tetracyclines)
  • acetylsalicylic acid (medicine used to treat blood clots)

Overdosage:

AMPILOX C DS 1GM INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse if you experience any unusual symptoms like nausea, vomiting and diarrhea or neurotoxic symptoms like limb weakness or numbness, loss of memory, loss of vision, headache in very high doses in patients with kidney problems.
