What is ACIVIR?

What ACIVIR is used for?

  • It is used for the treatment of cold sores (Herpes simplex virus infections)

Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:

  • are allergic to acyclovir, valaciclovir, propylene glycol or to any of the ingredients of this medicine
  • are suffering from HIV infection
  • have undergone a bone marrow transplantation
  • are taking cancer treatment
  • Tell your doctor before taking this medicine if you are or may be pregnant or are breast feeding
  • ACIVIR can be used in children and adolescents as recommended by doctor


  • Tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription, vitamin supplement or herbal products
  • Always use this medicine exactly as told by your doctor
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before use
  • Apply a thin layer of this medicine to the infected area and the skin immediately next to it, 5 times a day at intervals of about 4 hours. Take care not to rub the infected skin any more than you need to
  • Wash your hands again, to avoid spreading the infection
  • Use ACIVIR for up to 5 days. If the infection has not healed after this time, you can continue to use it for a further 5 days
  • If your ACIVIR gets worse during the treatment period, or if it has not healed after 10 days of treatment, STOP using the ACIVIR and seek advice from your doctor

If you use more ACIVIR

  • If you use more ACIVIR , contact your doctor or nearest hospital immediately

If you forget to use ACIVIR

  • If you forget to use ACIVIR , apply it as soon as you remember, and apply the remaining doses for that day
  • Do not apply double dose for a forgotten dose

If you stop using ACIVIR

  • Do not stop using this medicine without consulting your doctor
Very Rare

Like all medicines, ACIVIR can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • allergic reactions such as rash, itchy skin, weal, swelling of the lips, face and eyelids


  • burning or stinging feeling at the application site
  • itching
  • mild drying or flaking of your skin
  • redness of your skin
  • skin rash

What you should not do?

  • Do not treat yourself with this medicine you must seek advice from your doctor
  • Do not use on mucous membranes as ACIVIR can cause irritation. The areas to avoid include the inside of the mouth and nose, the eyes and inside the vagina
  • Do not use this product to treat mouth ulcers, or for herpes infections which are in or near your eyes or in the genital area
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Store at room temperature (15-25°C)
  • Do not refrigerate
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date
