INTRODUCTION

CANESTEN contains Clotrimazole which belongs to the group of medicines called azole antifungal agents. It is indicated for the treatment of vaginal thrush in women. Vaginal thrush (also known as vaginal candidiasis) is a common fungal infection caused by the fungi, that lives harmlessly in the vagina. However, due to certain factors (e.g. hormonal changes), the natural pH balance that keeps the fungus under control may get disrupted and develops into an infection in the vagina and may spread to its surrounding area. Symptoms of thrush includes persistent itching and/or burning, redness, swelling and a white non−smelling discharge of vagina.

Clotrimazole acts by blocking the biosynthesis of fungal ergosterol which leads to the disruption of fungal cell membrane and inhibition of fungal growth. Thrush can also be aggravated by sexual intercourse. Avoid having vaginal intercourse when you are infected by vaginal thrush, because it can be passed to your partner and may lead to penile thrush. Along with the treatment, try to keep the infected area clean by washing it daily. Always wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothes and change your sanitary protection regularly. Although you may feel itching in the infected area, avoid scratching vigorously as it may damage your skin and cause the infection to spread further.

This medicine is not meant for oral use. It should be inserted into the vagina for treating local vaginal infection. CANESTEN can reduce the effectiveness of rubber contraceptives, such as condoms or diaphragms, so choose an alternative preventive measure for at least 5 days after using this product. Avoid the use of intravaginal douches, tampons, spermicides or other vaginal products while using this product. The most common side effects of this medicine are burning, itching and irritation in the vagina, bleeding from vagina and stomach pain. Contact your doctor if any of the symptom bothers you.

Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have irregular vaginal bleeding, blood stained or foul-smelling vaginal discharge or lower abdominal pain. Do not use this medicine while you are in your periods, as it may become less effective. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor for advice before using. Your doctor will decide whether you should use this medicine or not. If your doctor tells you to take this medicine, try to insert the medicine without using an applicator. Generally, the symptoms of thrush should disappear within 3 days of therapy. If there is no improvement even after using it for 7 days, please tell your doctor.

USES OF CANESTEN

  • Vaginal thrush

HOW CANESTEN WORKS

Clotrimazole exerts its antifungal activity by inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential constituent of fungal cell membrane which helps to keep the fungal cell intact and directly promotes its growth. Inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis damages the fungal cell integrity and leads to the inhibition of fungal growth.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Use this medicine as directed by your physician. It is for intra-vaginal use only. Do not swallow or chew the medicine. Always use the applicator provided in the package to insert the medicine. Wash your hands before use. Wash your hands thoroughly after use. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and health condition. Continue to use this medicine, as long as your doctor tells you to do so, to obtain better results.
