Uses of Tofacitinib

Tofacitinib is used to treat is used to treat inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (chronic inflammatory diseases affecting the joints, causing pain and swelling), psoriatic arthritis (an arthritic condition that occurs in an individual with psoriasis), ulcerative colitis (ulcerative inflammation of the digestive tract), and ankylosing spondylitis (fusion of bones in the spine).

It is also used to treat polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis and juvenile psoriatic arthritis, which cause pain and inflammation of joints in children. It is used alone or together with other drugs, such as methotrexate.

Tofacitinib is among antirheumatic drugs that help in treating inflammatory diseases by modifying the immune system. It prevents the body from responding to these substances called cytokines (controls growth and activity of other immune system cells and blood cells). It also inhibits the inflammation process via a new pathway (Janus kinases).
