Uses of Pirfenidone

Pirfenidone is used in the treatment of mild to moderate Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (tissues in your lungs become swollen and scarred over time, and as a result makes it difficult to breathe deeply) in adults.

How Pirfenidone works

Pirfenidone works by exhibiting anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antifibrotic properties that suppress the factors (transforming growth factor -ß (TGF-ß)) causing scarring and swelling of the tissues. As a result, it treats and controls the fibrosis of the tissues resulting in improving lung function and helping in breathing more easily. 

Common side effects of Pirfenidone

  • infections of the throat or the airways and sinusitis, influenza and/or common cold
  • nausea
  • stomach problems such as acid reflux, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion or stomach upset
  • weight loss, decreased appetite
  • difficulty sleeping
  • tiredness, dizziness, headache

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor:

  • in case of accidental overdosage
  • if you experience signs of angioedema or serious allergic reactions or anaphylaxis such as urticaria, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat causing difficulty in breathing or feeling faint
  • if you experience reddish non-elevated, or circular patches on the trunk, often with central blisters, skin peeling, ulcers of mouth, throat, nose, genitals and eyes. These serious skin rashes can be preceded by fever and flu-like symptoms. (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis)
