Meropenem: Antibiotics

How Meropenem works

Meropenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic which is active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It exerts its action by penetrating bacterial cells readily and interfering with the synthesis of vital cell wall components, which leads to cell death.

Common side effects of Meropenem

  • abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • headache
  • skin rash, itchy skin
  • pain and inflammation

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor:

  • in case of accidental overdosage
  • if you experience severe allergic reaction (severe rash, itching, or hives on the skin, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other parts of the body, shortness of breath, wheezing, or trouble breathing)

Health Tips for Meropenem

  • Take Meropenem on an empty stomach, about one hour before or two hours after a meal or as directed by the physician
  • Drink an adequate amount of water while taking Meropenem to ensure proper hydration and helps support kidney function and to prevent potential side effects
  • Complete the full prescribed course of Meropenem, even if you start feeling better before the treatment is complete. Stopping the medication earlier can lead to incomplete eradication of the infection, increasing the risk of antibiotic resistance
  • Follow good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of infection. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitiser. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle to support the immune system during the recovery process. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Get enough restful sleep, exercise regularly, manage stress, and avoid smoking and alcohol consumption
