Uses of Gliclazide

Gliclazide is used in adults to treat type II diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise and lifestyle changes alone does not result in adequate response.

Therapeutic Category

Gliclazide: Antidiabetic agents (Sulfonylurea)

How Gliclazide works

Gliclazide effectively controls blood sugar levels, where gliclazide makes the pancreas secrete more insulin to digest the circulating sugars (glucose) in the blood. It also makes the body more sensitive to insulin which helps in utilizing the circulating blood glucose (sugars) leading to decrease in blood glucose levels.

Common side effects of Gliclazide

  • hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels)
  • dizziness
  • headache

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor:

  • In case of accidental overdosage
  • If you experience severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash, swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue or throat which causes difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
  • If you experience severe skin reactions (such as DRESS characterized by fever or flu-like symptoms along with skin rashes with widespread blistering or peeling of skin)
  • If you experience signs of severe decrease in blood sugar level (such as confusion, headache, excessive sweating, clammy skin, trembling, weakness, double vision, excessive hunger, nausea, vomiting, problems in sleeping, feeling agitated, unable to concentrate, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, slowed reactions, depression, trouble seeing or speaking, paralysis, numbness, dizziness, hallucinations, difficulty in breathing, slowed or faster heartbeat with chest pain)

Health Tips for Gliclazide

  • Maintain a balanced and nutritious diet. Consume entire foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean meats, and whole grains. Processed foods, sugary snacks and beverages, and foods high in saturated and trans fats should be avoided. Avoid skipping meals. It is important to eat regular meals while taking this medicine to reduce the risk of low blood glucose levels
  • Regular physical activity will help you control your blood sugar levels, enhance your insulin sensitivity, and maintain a healthy weight. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week, as well as strength training twice a week
  • Limit your alcohol consumption or avoid it entirely. Alcohol may impair blood sugar management and interact with gliclazide. Discuss with your doctor whether moderate alcohol consumption is appropriate for you
  • Gliclazide should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. Follow the dosage and time recommendations. Do not skip or change dosages without first consulting your doctor
  • Make regular follow-up appointments with your doctor to monitor your diabetes treatment. If required, they can modify your treatment plan and address any issues
