Uses of Budesonide

Budesonide is used to treat respiratory conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. It can also be used to treat allergic rhinitis (nasal congestion, itching and repeated sneezing), nasal polyps, and inflammation of the large intestine (such as Ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, microscopic colitis and distal ulcerative colitis).

Therapeutic Category

Budesonide: Corticosteroids

How Budesonide works

Budesonide is a steroid medication. It works by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers within the body that triggers allergic response and pain, swelling and inflammation of airways or other body parts (Ex. intestines). As a result, it reduces airway inflammation, prevents airways from becoming narrow, improves breathing, controls signs of allergic rhinitis, and helps in the management of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Health Tips for Budesonide

  • Take budesonide exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change the dose or frequency of use it without consulting your healthcare provider
  • If you have been using budesonide regularly, do not stop using it suddenly without consulting your doctor. Abruptly stopping corticosteroids can lead to adrenal insufficiency and other withdrawal symptoms
  • If you are using budesonide via inhalation, rinse your mouth after each use. This medicine may cause oral thrush or fungal infections in the mouth. To minimize the risk, rinse your mouth with water after each use, especially if you are using an inhaler. This helps to remove any residual medication from your mouth
  • If you are using a budesonide inhaler, consider using a spacer device. A spacer helps to ensure that the medicine reaches your lungs effectively and reduces the amount of medicine deposited in the mouth and throat
  • While budesonide can help manage inflammation, it's essential to avoid triggers and allergens that worsen your condition, such as smoke, pollen, pet dander, or certain chemicals
  • Budesonide should be used in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks and under the direct supervision of a healthcare provider
