Uses of Azilsartan
Azilsartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). This medicine can be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
Therapeutic Category
Azilsartan: Anti-hypertensive agents (Angiotensin II receptor antagonists)
How Azilsartan works
Azilsartan works by relaxing the blood vessels and making it easier for the heart to pump blood. It selectively inhibits angiotensin II from binding to the angiotensin II type-1 receptor (AT1). This receptor inhibition provides the antihypertensive activity as it blocks the pressor effects of angiotensin II, thus it lowers down the blood pressure.
Common side effects of Azilsartan
When to consult your doctor
Consult your doctor:
- In case of accidental overdosage
- If you experience difficulties in breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat
- If you experience itching of the skin with raised bumps or welts
Health Tips for Azilsartan
- Maintain a low-sodium, saturated-fat and cholesterol-containing diet. Consume plenty of fruits and veggies, healthy grains, and lean protein. The DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension) diet is an example of a blood pressure-lowering diet
- Limit your consumption of high-sodium foods such processed and canned foods, quick foods and salty snacks. Lowering sodium consumption can help reduce blood pressure
- Exercise on a regular basis, as directed by your healthcare physician. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise each week or 75 minutes of strenuous exercise. Exercise has been shown to reduce blood pressure and enhance cardiovascular health
- Losing weight if you are overweight or obese might have a substantial impact on your blood pressure readings. Even a small weight decrease can benefit blood pressure and overall health
- If you smoke, you should think about quitting because it can raise your blood pressure and increase your risk of heart disease. Limit your alcohol consumption because excessive drinking can raise your blood pressure
- Take azilsartan exactly as your doctor has instructed. Do not skip doses or discontinue medicine without first checking with your healthcare professional
