Uses of Ambroxol
Ambroxol is primarily used to treat respiratory conditions characterized by excessive mucus production, such as bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other conditions affecting the airways.
Therapeutic Category
Ambroxol: Expectorants and mucolytics
How Ambroxol works
Ambroxol works by facilitating the expectoration of mucus by breaking down acid mucopolysaccharide fibers (sugar molecules responsible for mucus production) and stimulates surfactant (an anti-glue agent) that prevents adhesion of mucus to the bronchial wall thus preventing its accumulation and providing clearance in the airway due to acute and chronic respiratory diseases in affected individuals.
Common side effects of Ambroxol
- taste disturbance
- numbness in the throat and mouth
- gastrointestinal disturbances such as stomach pain, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and vomiting
When to consult your doctor
Consult your doctor if you experience:
- Signs of severe skin reactions such as skin rash on the mucus membranes of mouth, throat, nose, eyes, and/or genitals

- Drinking plenty of water can help thin out the mucus, making it easier to cough up and expel. Adequate hydration is essential for maintaining overall respiratory health
- Alcohol and smoking can irritate the respiratory tract and worsen respiratory conditions. It's best to avoid these substances while taking Ambroxol
